The clerk to Whitland Town Council has hit out at ‘vile and personal’ comments on social media, following negative remarks made on Facebook, which she stated were ‘untrue’.

At the January meeting of Whitland Town Council, in her guise as ‘Development Officer’ town clerk Melanie Priestley (who was also formerly clerk to Saundersfoot; Kilgetty/Begelly; and Penally Community Councils) presented a report to councillors, summarising her time in the role.

“I’m sad that my time as development officer has come to an end,” she stated in a report to members.

“Over the past three months there has been a noticeable change in the community coming together, despite the negative and vile, personal and untrue comments on social media.

“The ‘community events working group’ has worked tirelessly to ensure that all members of the community have had events to attend.”

She explained that after her role had commenced in January 2024, lots of worthwhile events had been arranged for the town, including - defib and first aid training, a St David’s Day ‘cawl and entertainment’ evening, the carnival buffet, summer craft mornings, a Halloween disco, and to finish the year with a bang, the three-day Community Christmas event, which featured six events altogether, with something for all ages.

She also highlighted working with the School Council, and on such projects as the repainting of the Bryngwenllian bus shelter, and working with pupils to design the logo for the studio, as well as opening communication with the youth of Whitland.

“May I thank the Council for this opportunity and ask that the ‘events working party’ remain and a report from such is presented at Council meetings when necessary,” she continued.

The Council thanked her for all her hard work during the year and advised that they will continue to support the ‘working party’ with future events within Whitland.
