A warning that fly-tipping won’t be tolerated in Pembrokeshire’s seaside towns, has been issued by a local county councillor, who fears that some locations will turn into a ‘magnet’ for mess once again during the holiday season.
The latest incident in Saundersfoot, has sparked the village’s county councillor for the south ward to speak up again on the matter.
One area which Cllr Chris Williams has received complaints about, is a particular hotspot, as waste storage bins are positioned directly next to a pavement, leading to rubbish often being placed at this property, and time and time again left to local residents to clean up the mess.
He said that he is concerned that the location will become a ‘fly-tipping magnet’ during the summer season once again, which he says is unacceptable for local residents.
“I have previously stated my concerns regarding fly-tipping at the bottom of Stammers Road before it joins Brewery Terrace,” remarked Cllr Williams, who said that there have been issues at this location going back to 2012.
“Residents have had to deal with this for many years and it is often left to locals to clear up this mess.
“I feel that this hasn’t been dealt with appropriately and the residents’ views don’t appear to have been considered.”
Cllr Williams said that for this particular case, whilst on a site visit, the team from Pembrokeshire County Council did some investigational works and found the rubbish dumped to have come from holiday properties.
“This site is totally open and within close proximity to the pavement and highway,” continued Cllr Williams.
“Whilst PCC fenced off the wheelie bins last year, I still felt this wouldn’t eradicate the problem of opportunist fly-tipping. Bags are now either placed on top of the wheelie bins or dumped in the front courtyard.
“This is unacceptable for the residents and every effort will be made to chase offending holiday homes.
“The meeting was positive and the need for a fence to screen the property is clearly required. This would make a significant difference, as costs are mounting for PCC to remove waste and generally keep this location free of waste.
“I am hopeful that we can make changes to improve the current situation for local residents on this street and also keep costs down for PCC, through preventative measures that residents feel is long overdue.”
Last summer, it was said that Saundersfoot saw a vast improvement with regards to domestic waste dumping according to Cllr Williams, although, again it was highlighted that some second home and holiday let owners, along with businesses, continued to flout the rules, by disposing of domestic and trade waste in public bins around the resort.
Working with the Local Authority, Cllr Williams sought to bring in an effective way to tackle illegal waste disposal around the locality.
This resulted in a list of holiday let accommodation being included in a trial to ensure that proper waste trade agreements were in place at such properties, in line with Government guidelines regarding waste and recycling.
