Councillors in Saundersfoot and its surrounding areas have been in discussions in recent weeks to set out a vision for improved sport and recreation facilities for the village.
County Councillor for Saundersfoot’s south ward Chris Williams, along with Amroth and Saundersfoot North ward councillor Alec Cormack, and St Mary Out Liberty/St Florence councillor Rhys Jordan have held ‘positive discussions’ in trying to unite all the various groups that use the facilities at the King George V playing field grounds.
“Talks are underway with the cricket and football clubs as well as the Sports Club, that hopefully will benefit our village,” said Clr. Williams.
“A meeting is planned with the Bowling Club and once all the individual groups have been consulted then we will meet together. We’re also looking at speaking with the trust at the fields to not only get advice but guidance on how we can all improve the surrounding areas that have become extremely neglected.
“We have already had extremely positive comments from Pembrokeshire County Council, members of which have already visited the site. There seems to be a determination to improve the area and this will only be achieved if everyone works together. If successful we will develop a legacy for the future.”
Councillors have enquired regarding the land adjoining the sports field, with agents currently dealing with this and a submission has been sent to acquire the land for sporting activities.
There is also a desire to improve the changing rooms, have a 4G MUGA (Multi Use Games Area), a wildflower garden and further parking facilities. Councillors are also meeting with skateboarders this week in a bid to move things forward.
“Money generated from the car park can be ploughed back into continually improving facilities as well as creating projects to encourage other organisations to use the facility,” continued Clr. Williams.
“At this early stage there is no funding in place but with the conversations we’ve had already, there is a belief that grants could be applied for to assist in new facilities.”
Clr. Williams said that one of the ‘biggest issues’ in the village is the lack of parking.
“Saundersfoot Community Council put a plan together four years ago but they then had to withdraw it. The proposal by us county councillors working together is that we explore the option of parking on land owned by the Community Council.
“To do this we will want all the organisations to come together to make this viable so that all parties will benefit. It’s also very important that we engage with local residents that live near the fields to make sure we take on board any queries,” he added.
