This is the first time these sides had met, but with only a squad of 15 boys due to injury and illness, they were certainly up for it.
Captain Nick Drewitt leading by example opened the scoring with the first two tries, which were copybook. Following constant Tenby pressure, which took play into the Penygroes 22, each try saw quick ruck ball with Drewitt demanding the ball, cutting the Penygroes defence to ribbons, which put Tenby 10-0 up after 10 minutes.
The third Tenby try was a beauty from the restart, flanker Lloyd Wilson caught the ball and with great strength took all the Penygroes pack with him to the half-way, again quick ball was won, scrum-half Rhys Thomas fed his backs, sucking in the Penygroes defence for centre Dan Colley to outpace the defence to score in the corner.
Tenby were now steaming. With five minutes to half-time big burly prop Marvin Thomas gathered the ball 40-yards out, made a break and crossed the line with half of the Penygroes team on his back, to score an excellent solo try, with Grant Rogers kicking the conversion to bring the half to a close at 22-0.
The first half was a superb effort with the forwards working well as a unit, the scrums solid, with Adam Ball ruling the line out, Jon Walker having an excellent all round game as hooker. The back run of Wilson, Rogers and Drewitt were everywhere, with second row Adam Hughes showing great handling skills.
Tenby kicked off the second period, unfortunately easing off the gas, thus allowing Penygroes to come back into the game. Now was the time for the Tenby backs to defend, centres Ollie Morgan and Dan Colley, wingers Jonsie Lewis and Barrie John all doing sterling work, full-back Lee Hope having a great game, preventing the opposition from crossing the line.
Tenby took play deep into Penygroes territory where Lloyd Wilson again showing great strength and speed powered his way over to seal the game at 27-0.
With minutes to go Penygroes came back into the game with two late tries, making the final score of a very entertaining game 27-14.
A special thanks to Penygroes for their warm welcome and to the parents for supplying the lifts, without their support these games could not take place, and thanks to Karen and Pete for their detour to Llandovery! Next game for the U16s is this Sunday when they play Carmarthen Quins away.
