Sir,
In response to Mr. Wilson's letter (Observer, July 9), I would like to state that Spar milk, bread and newspaper lorries arrive at 5.30 am and leave the town by 7 am, thus causing no disruption to traffic passing through the town.
Also the work service ranges from four to 28 years, which can hardly be termed as 'casual' labour. This store spends in excess of £200,000 on produce bought from local suppliers, which helps the economic growth of the area.
Sam and Gina Palmer, owners of this store, are employers who care for their employees and families, in many cases employees remain as statistics. They also willingly and generously donate to local charities, activities and events that are held in the town.
Narberth is a unique, picturesque, old market town that is steeped in history and is a magnet that draws tourists and shoppers from far and wide and indeed has much to offer the public. It is a shop window offering a vast range of produce and fancy goods and is enhanced by its park, library, sports and leisure facilities, restaurants, bars, castle, museum and wide variety of shops.
Having recently visited Lampeter, Cardigan, Milford Haven and Pembroke, these towns portray a very depressing picture. Twenty years ago the same could have been said concerning Narberth, but due to the hard work of business traders and the town council, it is now a busy, thriving town, which makes it 'unique'.
Looking beyond that shop window, yes there is potential for this town, but much thought should be given as to the way forward to enhance and not spoil what has already been achieved.
I also carried out a traffic survey one afternoon from 3.30 - 4.30 pm and recorded 674 vehicles passing through the one-way system and noted that pedestrians, including schoolchildren, had great difficulty in crossing the road. This is without extra traffic flow, an aspect which was not mentioned.
Whilst I totally agree that individuals are entitled to an opinion, it is inappropriate to present misconstrued details and facts that are incorrect.
I do not live in Narberth, but I do enjoy the benefits it offers; also I care about the future of this town.
M. Bradley,
Manageress,
Spar Stores,
36 High Street,
Narberth.
