Wednesday, March 1st is St David’s Day, the day St David died in 589 AD. His remains are buried at St David’s Cathedral and his shrine became a place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages.

Legend has it that St David ordered his soldiers to wear leeks on their helmets during a battle against the Saxons during the sixth century, while at the Battle of Crecy in 1346, Welsh archers fought in a field of leeks. By 1536, Henry VIII gave a leek to his daughter on March 1, and the leek was associated with St David’s Day.
