Three Tenby lads are deeply concerned that they may not be able to get back to Pembrokeshire due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Fraser Finlay, Tom Murphy and Tom James are currently stuck in New Zealand and now face a very uncertain future.

It comes after the Foreign Secretary Dominic Rabb advised that all residents who are usually based in the UK should return now as international travel is becoming more difficult with the closure of borders, airlines suspending flights and airports closing.

Mr. Rabb said: “We are strongly urging UK travellers overseas to return home now where and while there are still commercial routes to do so.”

“Around the world, more airlines are suspending flights and more airports are closing, some without any notice.

“Where commercial routes don’t exist, our staff are working round the clock to give advice and support to UK nationals. If you are on holiday abroad, the time to come home is now while you still can.

Mr. Finlay and his friends told the Observer that they have been outside the British Embassy in Auckland and have little money, resources, and no definite accommodation after Friday.

He, said: “We are currently outside the Embassy and they have told us ‘you need to leave, there’s nothing we can do and we don’t know what you should do’ then walked off and locked doors.

“We’ve been given no information and are expected to just get by.”

Mr. Finlay added that he and his friends had spent thousands of pounds on flights to return to the UK, but they had all been cancelled.

He also mentioned that he was part of a group of over 500 people trying to get back to British soil.

Mr. Murphy’s sister Nia got in touch to further explain the situation.

She said the boys had been travelling and working whilst in New Zealand and were now unemployed.

Ms. Murphy added that the lads had a flight home booked for Friday, March 27, with Emirates Airline, however, all flights were postponed with no notice and until an unknown later date, which could be July time, just over three months away.

“They have been phoning, emailing, messaging all the airlines/travel agents, MPs, anyone they think could help,” Ms.Murphy explained.

“All of our family have also spent hours on the phone trying to find some relevant information on what is being done to help, but have received the minimum help that could have been provided.”

Ms. Murphy then claimed that one travel agent from STA travel turned his work phone off as he was ‘working from home’ and redirected his phone calls to the office,

“When we got in touch with the main office we were told that this particular travel agent had taken no measures to further help the boys get a last minute flight and therefore we had to speak to a different agent from the company to explain the whole situation,” she continued.

Ms. Murphy said that the boys had heard nothing back from their local MP Simon Hart, so they went to the British Embassy in Auckland where they found many people queueing.

She mentioned that the Embassy had now been closed and had told everyone that there was nothing that they could do to help, essentially leaving them with nowhere to turn.

“The boys are now worried sick over what to do and where to turn as they have been turned away from quite literally anybody that could have helped them as well as the thousands of other Brits stuck abroad,” Ms. Murphy explained.

“They are worried that they will be unable to fund themselves if flights do not reopen until July and will essentially be left ‘homeless’ as they will be unable to afford/find accommodation as hostels and accommodation are shutting down.

“My family are devastated by the lack of help and support by the embassy in New Zealand, they have closed their doors on vulnerable people in the middle of a global crisis.

“If our own government is not their to support us in the middle of a pandemic, then who are we supposed to turn to.

“We realise that this is a stressful time, but we need answers! How long will it take for the government to realise that their own citizens are stuck abroad, many with no funds to support themselves and leaving family members the other side of the world worried sick!”

Ms. Murphy has also published an impassioned plea for help on Facebook and asks that anyone in a similar situation to message her.

“If we stand together and keep sharing to try and help, then they will hopefully receive the help that they need!” she said.
