TENBY 2 GOODWICK 1

Goodwick arrived fashionably late, but left unfashionably conquered.

With a loss midweek to Monkton AFC, Goodwick were desperate for a victory at the Clicketts to get them back on track. Brace and Maytum kept their winning formula from Tuesday's game using the successful 3-5-2 formation.

With a late kick-off, both sides looked as though they weren't going to play the football they are capable of, and play was cautious rather than creative.

Goodwick drew first blood through some sloppy defending and an error by 'keeper Dewi 'Calamity James' Davies, who let a less than powerful strike at goal through his East-West facing legs. Tenby went into half time a demoralised outfit.

During Brace's half-time talk, the tide turned, the breeze dropped and the sun came out. It was a beautiful day.

Jimmy Thomas came on for the injured Luke Lawrence. Maytum switched back to the traditional 4-4-2 and Tenby started enthusiastically.

Mule Edwards and Catlin moved up to top gear and Mr. Cooke encouraged both teams to play on, admiring from a distance, while everyone worked tirelessly to get the deserved equaliser.

It was inevitable and it came when the ball was centred and among all the confusion the first person to arrive was Italian poacher Subbiani, who netted a well deserved first goal for Tenby since 1984 - the year his strike partner McGloughlin was born. McGloughlin, receiving the ball with his back to goal, swivelled on a sixpence to get a shot on target, which the 'keeper could only palm into the way of Subbiani. The smile was wide and the celebration came in the form of a Nobby Stiles skip. A rugby player since leaving the AFC at 16, he has returned onto the scene offering Tenby a solid base in midfield.

The United weren't going to settle for a draw and Brace led by example, battling for everything. Finlay and Meyrick, having their best games to date, were formidable and nothing looked like it would pass the back four.

Ryan Lawrence worked hard, back tracking to help his midfield when necessary, even taking a 'Stone Cold' for his troubles. This was a 'gutsy' performance by Tenby.

The winning strike came similar to that of the first, when Scottie McGloughlin again received the ball back to goal, and again swivelled on a sixpence to get a shot on target, which the 'keeper could only palm into the way of Jimmy 'The Source' Thomas, who was on hand to drive the ball home. Nice one Dave!

This victory stands the home side in good stead. To beat a successful side like Goodwick must mean that some things are being done right by the management team and players. We remain optimistic.

It must be satisfying for watching junior coach Gerry Rigby, to see the boys he worked so hard with as juniors, finally giving such creditable performances at senior level.

ST. CLEARS U13s 1

TENBY U13s 7

The Tenby and Saundersfoot Lions sponsored Tenby Under 13s started their new league campaign with a potentially tough away trip to St. Clears. The first 15 minutes saw both teams battling hard in midfield with no clear goal chances created by either side.

Tenby broke the deadlock on 15 minutes when Oliver Morgan directed a powerful header into the roof of the net from a Matthew Fleming corner.

Tenby's second goal came on 23 minutes after David Jones made a superb solo run and played a delightful through ball to Ashley Prior to fire home. Tenby's possession of the ball after the first goal was 75 per cent and any attack that St. Clears could muster was effectively dealt with by the strong defence of Ieuân Rowell, David Saunders, Jamie Robinson and Morgan.

Tenby continued to dominate the midfield, with Jack Lawrence and Matthew Jones setting up countless chances for the forwards and Matthew Fleming and Prior coming close with shots. Rowell pushed forward from defence and came close to scoring, and his superb overall work and pass rate is worthy of mention.

Prior made it 3-0 on 25 minutes after a brilliantly skilful solo run ended with the ball slamming the back of the net.

Number four came just before half-time when Prior and Fleming worked a move between them that saw Fleming run past his marker and cross the ball for David Jones to score.

Ashley Murdoch came on at half-time for Mark Davies who had a good first half, and Tenby continued with the pressure and their dominance of the game. Saunders had a superb shot that just went wide after combining with Lawrence and Prior.

The work rate and movement off the ball of the Tenby players was tremendous and the aggressive tackling of Robinson and Morgan left the home team under no illusions as to who was boss.

Sam Davies made his Tenby league debut, coming on for Robinson, and soon settled into the pace of the game.

Lawrence scored Tenby's fifth goal after an unselfish lay-off from D. Jones.

St. Clears had a rare attack that culminated in Damian Walters in the Tenby goal making a fine dive to tip the ball past the post. The homesters scored a consolation goal from the resulting corner.

Tenby instantly replied when M. Jones set up an attack from midfield that saw Lawrence feed the ball across to Prior, who, with his back to the goal, turned and curled a stunning left foot shot into the net to complete his hat-trick.

M. Jones made it 7-1 when he slammed the ball into the net from a goalmouth scramble.

An excellent first win for Tenby, keep it up boys, and keep working hard for each other. Well done.

Thanks to Darrel for running the line, and to all the parents for their support and transport of the boys.

Tenby team: Damian Walters, Ieuân Rowell, David Saunders, Jamie Robinson, Oliver Morgan (capt.), Matthew Fleming, Jack Lawrence, Matthew Jones, Mark Davies, David Jones, Ashley Prior, Ashley Murdoch, Sam Davies.

MONKTON 5

Tenby's Picnic Basket sponsored Under 12s side took to the field in their smart new kit thanks to the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Thomas, of The Picnic Basket, Tenby.

Facing a very strong Monkton side, on a full size pitch, for the first time, Tenby struggled to get to grips with the difference in play from mini-soccer.

The Monkton side went ahead with a long range shot that gave the Tenby 'keeper no chance.

After some even play, Tenby replied with a goal from Sam Christopher, but again went behind after a superb shot from halfway by Monkton's Mikey Boswell.

Monkton scored again before half-time, despite some good defending by Scott Helmich, Gavin Kinsey, Jamie Robins and Alex Hamilton.

In the second-half, Joe Lewis replaced Alex Hamilton and worked hard at right-back.

Billy Vaughan scored for Tenby and, with Aaron Goldsmith partnering him well in midfield, Tenby created several chances. Richard Jones ran well on the left and Jordan Lloyd had a very good game on the right-wing, supported well by Guto Griffiths.

However, Monkton broke quickly and managed to score again. They piled the pressure on and forced 'keeper Richard Thomas to make some brave and crucial saves.

Christopher scored again for Tenby, but Monkton had the final say with another well-taken goal that caught the defence out of position.

Hopefully, Tenby can learn from this defeat and improve their team play for the rest of the season.

Thanks to Remi for refereeing and Paul for running the line.

Tenby squad: Richard Thomas, Jamie Robins, Scott Helmich, Alex Hamilton, Billy Vaughan, Aaron Goldsmith, Richard Jones, Jordan Lloyd, Guto Griffiths, Gavin Kinsey, Sam Christopher, Joe Lewis.

NARBERTH U12s 1

TENBY U12s 15

Picnic Basket-sponsored Tenby U12s started this match in fine style when Gavin Kinsey opened the scoring with a cross-shot which had danger written on it from the moment it left his foot. This set the scene for some power play from the fast Tenby attack, with goals coming at regular intervals for the visitors, following some accurate passing, and dangerous crosses which were sent in at every opportunity.

By the 20th minute, Tenby were well ahead with an amazing 6-0 lead, each goal having a careful finishing touch, with Guto Griffiths, Billy Vaughan, Jordan Lloyd and Sam Christopher all being on the score sheet.

Aaron Goldsmith's hard work in midfield and willingness to pass the ball early to the feet of his team-mates, established a good pattern of play for Tenby, and the discipline of the players meant that the shape of the team was preserved even when Billy made long runs out of the midfield to give support to the attackers.

As half-time approached, and with a sporting Narberth finding their rhythm, Tenby's challenge was to keep going, and Sam Christopher showed how dangerous he can be with goals from difficult angles which left the home goalkeeper diving in vain.

Richard Thomas was quick off his goal-line on a couple of occasions to bring Tenby up to half-time with nine goals to their credit, and a clean sheet to reward the whole defence of Jamie Robins, Joe Lewis, Richard Jones and Kurt Smith.

The first-half goalscorers were Gavin Kinsey, Guto Griffiths (3), Billy Vaughan, Jordan Lloyd and Sam Christopher (3).

Tenby's need to continue the second-half with the same skill, determination and teamwork was stressed in the half-time team-talk by coach Angela Nicholls, and if to act as a further reminder, Narberth scored from the edge of the penalty area when the necessary tackles from Tenby players hurrying back, were just not there.

Tenby learned their lesson well and an inspired midfield display by Billy Vaughan brought the edge back to the visitors' attack, with good crossfield passes to Jordan Lloyd on the right and Gavin Kinsey on the left to open up the Narberth defence regularly.

Billy made good use of his speed and vision to power through the middle and wrongfoot the home goalkeeper who never gave up trying, and the panic this caused, gave more opportunity to Gavin Kinsey, Guto Griffiths and Sam Christopher to find the net.

Tenby finished strongly in spite of a spirited fightback by Narberth which brought Richard Thomas into action on a couple of occasions, with the final goal-scoring for the match being Gavin (2), Sam (5), Guto (4), Billy (3) and Jordan.

This impressive win should give Tenby some confidence for some further more difficult matches when goal-difference is important.

Squad (all used): Richard Thomas, Guto Griffiths, Jamie Robins, Aaron Goldsmith, Joe Lewis, Alex Smith, Sam Christopher, Billy Vaughan, Gavin Kinsey, Richard James, Jordan Lloyd, Kurt Smith.
