Tenby has been voted one of the top 10 free driving destinations in a poll conducted by car hire company Avis. The poll set out to highlight the wealth of accessible, beautiful destinations there are in the UK and the results show that the most popular are also those best visited by car.
Tenby was the only Welsh destination to appear in the top 10, beating off competition from Llanthony Abbey, Llangrannog and Worm's Head promontory.
Avis worked with Visit Britain (the UK tourist authority) to select 40 free attractions, to celebrate 40 years of the Avis slogan, 'We try harder'. It was then up to the public to vote for their favourite.
The survey was carried out online and received over 2,300 votes, with nearly a third (28 per cent) going to the popular beauty spot of Lake Windemere. St. Ives in Cornwall took second place (with 18.7 per cent) and the New Forest in Hampshire came in a very close third (scoring 18.6).
Avis spokesperson, Sarah Kadodwala, commented: "The UK is often criticised for being more expensive than holiday destinations abroad. We wanted to show that there are plenty of places in this country that are free to visit and easily accessible by car - perfect for a family day out or part of a UK based holiday. We hope this will encourage the UK public to discover all the wonderful sites on their own doorstep."
