Last week, SI Tenby and District and the Salvation Army joined forces with a number of other local organisations in a sponsored walk through the streets of Tenby to raise awareness of human trafficking and modern-day slavery. Participants included a large group from Steps2Health, as well as fellow Soroptimists, representatives from Tenby Arts Club and SI Haverfordwest. SI Wales South has made the issue of human trafficking its regional project and SI Tenby president, Dr. Anne Kelly, has been selected as the regional representative to serve on a County Forum, involving representatives from organisations across Dyfed Powys, set up to address the crime of human trafficking in the local community. The enthusiastic walkers gathered at 6 pm in the Beatrix Potter Gardens at the start of the march in order to register and collect bottles of water kindly donated by Celtic Fayre. Tenby Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, then officially started the walk by cutting the tape, ably assisted by SI Tenby president, Dr. Anne Kelly, and Captain David Morgans, the commanding officer of Tenby Salvation Army. The walkers attracted considerable attention from both locals and holidaymakers as they made their way down to the harbour before returning via Crackwell Street to the gardens. Here they were rewarded with a healthy snack generously provided by Sainsbury's. All sponsorship money will be given to the Salvation Army who provide invaluable support to individuals being rescued from trafficking to help them start to reclaim their freedom. The Salvation Army is also working to empower communities through education and income generation so that they are better protected from the dangers of being trafficked in the first place.
