While five miles cycling doesn't seem much for 10 and 11-year-olds, it's like a Tour de France stage for four and five-year-olds. And that was the age of some of the youngest members of the St. Florence VC School group, more than 50 strong, who tackled this challenge as part of the CTC (the national cyclists organisation) celebration of National Bike Week.
As Paul Rich, the local CTC representative, said: "It was so good to see such a turnout - not just the pupils, but the solid support of parents who got their bikes out for this event. Cycling is such a free and convenient alternative form of transport and with obesity amongst school children rising to alarming levels, cycling must provide a good basis for a fresh, interesting and very healthy lifestyle."
Headmaster Gari Davies turned out on his bike too and with a small army of marshals the 50-plus strong ride was shepherded round the village before setting out on the journey to West Jordanston. Here, the Rees family, as seems to be by now traditional, provided welcome refreshments for the return.
Back at the school, members of the PTA and many other helpers provided a superb and welcome barbecue. All profits from this, together with the ride sponsorship money, will go towards school funds.
Headmaster Gari Davies praised the work of local police who ensured that such a large ride progressed smoothly and safely from start to finish.
