Tenby’s town crier will embark on his final ‘meet and greet’ this Bank Holiday weekend, after spending the summer at the train station welcoming visitors to the seaside town.

Instead of the usual ‘Oyez Oyez’ and traditional bell ringing, visitors have been receiving a smile, a friendly wave and a ‘ hello – welcome to Tenby’ message from town crier and councillor Jim Cornwell.

“It will be sad for me to greet people for the last time this coming weekend at Tenby Railway Station - I have really enjoyed welcoming people to the town and especially pleased as to the comments and reactions of those arriving,” he said.

“Not everyone comes to Tenby by bus, coach and car - even those who come into the town to work have appreciated the friendly welcome.”

Clr. Cornwell has listed some of the amusing things that have happened, since spending Saturdays at the station, and how he has been able to provide some helpful tips and directions to those visiting.

“Children initially think I am a ‘Pirate’ - but parents usually guess correctly that I’m the town crier!” he continued.

“Some take photos, and many have asked why no bell? But many people call out ‘oyez oyez’

“Some ask directions or how to get to places they are staying, and one couple from abroad wanted to hear about the history of Tenby.

“Where are the nearest toilets and how can they get a taxis have been frequent questions.

“It has been an enjoyable experience and it will be sad to see it end. But I can say that this small gesture has been worthwhile and hope it has left visitors with a good impression of Tenby,” added Clr. Cornwell.
