After a pleasant car journey up from Pembrokeshire, 11 of us left the lonely chapel at Soar Y Mynydd, Tregaron, Ceredigion, to walk the 11 and a bit miles in this splendid scenic area of Wales (writes leader Chris Wellings).

The weather was bright and sunny with a little breeze. We left along a graveled track, before following a path through rough pasture and went past a farm, before climbing over a hill.

We stopped at this point for a breather and took in the lovely views in front of us and the river valley ahead. Some of us also posed for the first photo shoot.

We continued on our way down a steep hill and entered the river valley below and followed this for a couple of miles and decided to have our picnic overlooking the river and distant hills.

En-route, we met a couple from Cheshire who were walking in the opposite direction. We commented on how lucky we were to have all this remote and beautiful countryside to ourselves.

We branched off to the left after passing a farm and climbed a long, but gradual incline, before resting at the top to take in the views again.

In the distance, we could see the reservoir and eventually followed it back up the valley through the forestry until we arrived on the moorland again and followed the track back to our cars.

We all had a very enjoyable day out and we ended it with a welcome drink and a meal on the way home.

The next walks are as follows: tomorrow (Saturday) - Pontnedd Fechan, Neath waterfalls, 10 miles, meet at Angel Inn, CP SN900076, leaders Denise Lane and Elke Owens; Sunday - Carn Gelli/Llanwnda, seven miles, meet at lay-by on A487 Dyffryn, SM940370, leader Mike Phippard.
