Saundersfoot’s county councillors have been working with Neighbourhood Policing Team PCSOs to combat ongoing concerns of anti-social behaviour across the seaside village.

In recent weeks, county councillors Chris Williams and Alec Cormack have met with local PCSOs to highlight residents’ concerns.

“There were issues that were a great concern especially for residents on the Strand and around the village over the New Year period going into January. These issues included eggs being thrown at properties on The Strand and the front doors of these properties being banged,” explained Cllr Williams.

“Unfortunately a stained glass window was damaged and numerous residents had to clean up this mess on a regular basis. Books were also taken from the mobile library and also thrown at properties, resulting in books being soaked and unreadable.”

Cllr Williams said that many of these issues have now been resolved thanks to collaborative working between Neighbourhood Policing Team PCSOs and County Councillors at a recent ‘Meet The Street’ event that was held on The Strand.

“Further action was taken against the now identified youths and evening patrols by PCSOs on The Strand have deterred further anti-social behaviour,” continued Cllr Williams.

“I would sincerely like to thank the local residents for their patience and for those who have supplied the numerous doorbell and CCTV footage to identify a number of individuals.

“I would also like to remind all residents to be vigilant regarding their properties and make sure that they always lock up their properties when they leave their house unattended.

“There have been burglaries locally, especially in more rural parts and there have been numerous reports of suspicious vehicles in Llanteg, Amroth and Stepaside,” added Cllr Williams, who has highlighted a home and security leaflet which has been issued by Dyfed Powys Police to read on the ‘Tenby, Saundersfoot & Narberth Police’ Facebook page.

Cllr Williams has been vocal since becoming county councillor for Saundersfoot’s south ward in calling for a larger police presence for the coastal village, especially over busy holiday periods and the summer season, writing to the Chief Inspector of Pembrokeshire policing outlining his views, with anti-social behaviour and other related issues, frequently occurring in the community.

Labour’s MP for Mid and South Pembrokeshire Henry Tufnell recently promised action to tackle anti-social behaviour and shoplifting around the county’s communities, after the Crime and Policing Bill, which is central to the Government’s Plan for Change and Safer Streets mission, was introduced in Parliament recently, beginning its journey to becoming law.

“Since being elected, I’ve received countless messages from constituents and local businesses raising concerns about anti-social behaviour and shoplifting,” he remarked.

“Our local policing teams do an incredible job under immense pressure, and Labour’s new Crime and Policing Bill will support them.

“We need action to tackle the issues facing communities here and now; and I know that ending the £200 shoplifting immunity rule will have a positive impact for local shop owners, as many of them have told me how difficult it is in the current climate,” added Mr Tufnell.
