DIVISION ONE

SAUNDERSFOOT 114 (14 pts.) NEYLAND 61 (0)

Last Saturday, the Saundersfoot team beat Neyland by 53 shots and as a result won the Pembrokeshire League Shield for the third successive year. The Saundersfoot boys were one point ahead of their nearest rivals Whitland going into this match and by winning the maximum 14 points ensured that they could not be caught at the top of the table. The Saundersfoot team again finished the season strongly and hopefully this form can be taken into next season. On rink two, the Saundersfoot rink skipped by David Poole beat Neyland's Alan King by 12 shots. This match was very close until the 16th with only 2 shots between the two rinks. The Saundersfoot rink then took 12 shots in the next four ends which secured the rink victory. Rink three saw Stephen Poole's four beat Neyland's Bill Barratt by 18 shots, with the Saundersfoot boys winning 15 of the 21 ends. All four Saundersfoot boys had good games, especially James Criddle at number two. On rink four, Paul Diment's rink won the first 12 ends of his match against Brian Mckay from Neyland to take a 23-shot lead. The Neyland rink did make a slight comeback after tea, but the two points was never in any doubt. Saundersfoot's fourth rink, which was skipped by Phil Carpenter, beat Neyland's Geoff Nuttall 29-17. The rink scores were all tied on 11 each after 12 ends then the Saundersfoot boys took eight shots on the next two ends and from this point on the result never looked in doubt. Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Neyland skips only) were: Geoff Spiller, Macky Brace, John Roberts, David Poole 30; Alan King 18. Denvor Williams, James Criddle, Don Poole, Stephen Poole 28; Bill Barratt 10. Brian Jones, Gareth Hughes, John Baggott, Paul Diment 27; B. Mckay 16. John Jenkins, Paul Blayney, Myrddin Dennis, Phil Carpenter 29; Geoff Nuttall 17.

Welsh competitions

Saundersfoot's Chris Haley, Viv Edwards and Ann Lewis were in action in the Welsh Women's Bowling Association finals at Llantrisant yesterday (Thursday). On Monday, they earned themselves a place in the final with a superb victory over Gill Miles, of Sophia Gardens. They were due to play Anne Greenaway, of Gilfach, yesterday. The trio just missed out on making the 'double'. Joined by Ceris Hewlings, they lost on an extra end to Kathy Pearce's quartet from Berriew in the rinks.

Captain's Day

Saundersfoot captain Joan Lee had an enjoyable Captain's Day last Thursday. Winners of the highest rink of the afternoon were Chris Haley, Joyce Waters and Audrey Williams, while Marion Evans was the worthy recipient of the Captain's Shield. The afternoon was rounded off with a delicious buffet prepared by Ann Lewis and helpers.

Friendlies

Saundersfoot 111 Llanidloes 114

On a very pleasant afternoon, Saundersfoot welcomed Llanidloes mixed team to the green on Sunday for what turned out to be a very close game played in a good spirit. On rink one, Elsie Pendlebury, John Austin, Shirley Spiller and skip Marion Evans, quickly established an early lead of 11 shots to five at the interval and continued to play good woods to eventually finish worthy winners 20-13. On rink two, the rink of Pearl Thomas, Val Ruff, Gwynfor Davies and skip Geoff Spiller, went going end for end with their opposite numbers and even though they were four shots down going into the last end, they rallied to take a four and earned a well-deserved draw. On rink three, the Saundersfoot rink of Don Stokes, Dave Williams, Mike Carr and skip Kay Kennion, lost the first five ends and were seven-17 down at the interval, but with some determined bowling they came back to only lose by one shot at 20-21 - a very worthy effort. After taking an early lead, the Saundersfoot rink of George Cavell, Geoff Vigus, Ann Evans and skip John Jenkins, dropped a five, but they kept their composure and took a five back to win the game 20-16. Taking an early six shots on one end, the rink of John Evans, Jim Davies, Audrey Williams and skip Steve Dick, got of to a good start on rink five, but the Llanidloes rink refused to give up and fought back to take the last three ends and the match 16 -21. Llanidloes had a strong rink on rink six and even though the home rink of Peter Lewis, Lyn Statters, Nev Ruff, and skip Beryl Lewis, picked up a six on one end, they could not get ahead of their opponents who ran out worthy winners 15-23. This was another successful friendly for Saundersfoot with both teams enjoying the match and the laughter afterwards.

THE CAPTAINS TABLE 34 SAUNDERSFOOT 33

Saundersfoot Bowling Club played host to the lads of the 'Cabin' last Sunday for their annual friendly (writes Spectator). The fact that some of the team from the bowls club contained Cabin regulars and vice versa mattered not one iota and some riotous fun ensued. On rink one, Titch, Mike, Basky and Macky from the Captain's Table took on Davy, Lou and Paul Blayney and Paul's rink recorded a 19 shots to seven win over best mate Macky, although neither one cared about the result as they were still revelling in the fact that their beloved Manchester United were top of the Premiership! On rink two, Nigel, T. Mac, Jon Brace and Simon Evans, defeated the bowling club's vice-chairperson and Welsh International Ann Lewis's rink of George Rigden, Wally and Nick Taylor, by five shots. Rink three saw the Cabin's Joe Dennis, Kath Blayney and Brian Deeley gain a 17 shot to nine win over John Morris, Barrie Lee and Marion Evans. Afterwards (actually before and during a 'drinks break' also), everyone enjoyed a social drink (or two, or three, I could go on and on!) and a buffet prepared by Eiddwen Brace. Thanks must to to Macky for organising the day and to club president John Evans for keeping everyone supplied with liquid refreshment. Thanks also to Ian, of the Captain's Table, who also supplied a bottle of whisky for the raffle.
