The Pembroke and District Junior School Annual Rounders Festival organised by Pembrokeshire Education Authority took place at Pembroke Dock cricket ground on Wednesday, May 20.
The winners of this event are each year presented with the Tessa Harries Shield by the Inner Wheel Club of Pembroke, while medals are given to the winners and runners-up by the late Mrs. Harries's husband, Frank Harries.
This year, despite threatening rain, the tournament produced a thrilling and closely fought contest, with the following schools taking part, Golden Grove, Pembroke, Orielton, Pembroke Dock Community School, Pennar School, and St. Mary's Pembroke Dock, with unfortunately schools from Lamphey, Cosheston, Monkton Priory, Angle, and Stackpole, who have appeared in previous festivals, unable to attend.
The eventual winners were Pennar School, Pembroke Dock, with the Pembroke Dock Community School runners-up.
The shield was presented to the winners by the president of the Pembroke Inner Wheel Club, Mrs. Joan Cox, while Mr. Frank Harries distributed the medals. Other Inner Wheel members present were Connie Hildrich, Rosalie Lilwall, Pat Omnet, Ross Silcox, and Des and Christine Vanner.
Mrs. Tessa Harries, in whose name the shield is presented, was an outstanding member of the Pembroke Inner Wheel Club, having been press secretary, treasurer, and finally president, during her time with the group, and was much involved in the provision of costumes and properties for the well remembered Rotary Variety Shows produced by her husband Frank.
Mr. Harries himself has been the recipient of the prestigious Paul Harries Award for the services he has rendered over the years to the Rotary movement, while Mrs. Harries herself had received a President's Citation in recognition of her years of outstanding service.
The Inner Wheel are most indebted to Anne Mear, a member of staff at Pembroke Dock Community School, for her usual efficient and informed running of the event, and to all those teachers accompanying the competing schools who made the day such an enjoyable occasion in which the enthusiasm and sportsmanship of each and everyone was first class.
