Local Senedd Member Joyce Watson met construction workers and apprentices at the site of the new Haverfordwest Transport Interchange project recently.
The interchange will include improved pedestrian and cycle facilities, a more efficient bus station featuring seven bus bays and upgraded passenger facilities, and a modern multi-storey car park.
Joyce Watson MS chairs the Senedd Cross Party Group on Construction and co-chairs the cross-party group on Apprenticeships. She said:
“The Haverfordwest Public Transport Interchange will transform the town’s transportation infrastructure and boost the local economy.
“With around a year’s more work to go, it offers high quality work opportunities, and I was delighted to meet the talented apprentices who are working there.”
During the site visit on March 21, Mrs Watson met site workers and apprentices, including local construction trainee Matthew Thomas, and heard about their experiences.
Dean Williams, Project Manager at Kier Construction and Sheila Holmes, Engagement Advisor at Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) updated her on the project.
Sheila Holmes said that in supporting Kier Construction on the development of their supply chain, CITB can invest in the local skills system vital for the sector and the local economy. “The work and job opportunities will help to ensure that we can meet the skills demands needed for future infrastructure projects.”
The scheme, commissioned by Pembrokeshire County Council as part of their town centre regeneration programme, forms part of the Swansea Bay & West Wales Metro project. The project design has received nearly £17 million from the Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund.
Regional director at Kier Construction Ian Rees said: “It was great to welcome Joyce Watson MS for a tour of our Haverfordwest Public Transport Interchange project.
“This scheme for Pembrokeshire County Council will deliver a modern transport hub for the local community, improving connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors alike."
