There are some surprises in store for customers at Narberth's popular Wisebuys shop. In a response to many suggestions from the public, floor space has been greatly increased, with an attractive new section where there was previously just a store room.
As well as affording more room to browse the tempting array of wholesome foods, the new section also offers customers even more variety. There is a brand new delicatessen counter. It is packed with Welsh cheese, butter and paté, all supplied by Caws Cymru and local producers; in addition there are continental cheeses supplied by London's Anthony Rowcliffe and Son.
The much sought-after Pembertons' chocolates now have their own display fridge, where delicious treats can be bought in any quantity. And a new freezer has been installed, offering organic ice-cream and frozen food suitable for Narberth's many vegetarians.
The centrepiece of the shop, which arrived on Wednesday afternoon, is a chilled salad bar, commissioned in Portugal. In true 'pizza parlour' style, tubs can be filled with your own choice of salads; a convenient and tasty way to stay healthy.
More space has meant that existing lines can be extended, so there is an even greater selection of ground coffee and loose speciality teas. Fashionable foods such as olives, artichoke hearts, feta cheese and anchovies can now be chosen from a display counter at the front of the shop.
Since the new counter was established, sales of olives etc. have trebled.
"It's just phenomenal!" says manager Anthony Ryan.
The family business of Wisebuys got started when brothers Anthony and Jonathan found themselves out of work. Soon the whole family were involved in converting a photography shop in Pembroke into their own unique style of grocers.
That was about 18 years ago, with outlets opening subsequently in Pembroke Dock and Bethesda, near Tenby. The Narberth branch opened nine years ago and has proved extremely popular with the locals, who will be delighted with the new spacious feel to their Wisebuys store. In total, the shops employ about 20 members of staff.
Anthony explained that the Wisebuys policy is to sell "proper foods", wholesome and natural. Their high quality fruit and vegetables come from Cardiff and local sources. Fresh produce, jams and cakes are welcomed from local cottage industries and "whoever else comes along." Dried fruit, nuts and pulses are available in plentiful quantities, as well as a range of 'Epicure' products and those shiny spice packs by 'Seasoned Pioneers'.
Always happy to take orders from people with special dietary requirements, like allergies or diabetes, Wisebuys have also equipped their store with a ramp, so disabled people have access to the back of the shop.
Do pop in and see the new-look Narberth Wisebuys store. Designed by architect Andrew Shipley, the extension was built by a Swansea company who worked during the night and took just four days to complete the transformation. Since then, family and staff have worked hard to clean and stock the new fitments. The results are stunning. You won't want to leave!
