THERE have been 70th wedding anniversary celebrations this week for former Tenby couple, Major John and Mrs. Beryl Evans.

John and Beryl, affectionately known as Bunnie, aged 94 and 93, respectively, now live in Saltash.

They were married on September 6, 1939, at Charles Church, Plymouth, but will be remembered by many readers for living at Castle Hill, Tenby, for many years.

War hero John was a figurehead of tourism in the county and was a pioneer of such events as Tenby's Boxing Day Swim, and an inspiring influence in campaigns including Bring Back Pembrokeshire, Keep Tenby Tidy and Tenby in Bloom, while Bunnie was an ardent supporter of the campaign to rebuild a bandstand on Castle Hill.

The couple celebrated their platinum anniversary with a celebration with their family, which includes three sons, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren at the home of their son Jonathan and his wife Jane.

"It was an absolutely fabulous day," John told the Observer this week.

"The sun was shining and we were able to be in the garden with our family and friends," he said.

They also had a visit from the Mayor of Saltash, Sue Hooper, who presented them with a bouquet of flowers.

And their friends in Tenby remembered them too. John and Bunnie were delighted to receive a card and bouquet from Tenby in Bloom, plus greetings from Tenby Town Council and round-the-world adventurer Rosie Swale Pope.

Added John: "We were inundated with cards, gifts and flowers; everyone has made such a fuss. It has been so nice."
