Pembrokeshire Council's ‘Wellbeing Champion’ has given an update on Tenby’s leisure facilities, and the future of the swimming pool located at the town’s Leisure Centre.
A working group comprising officers and local county councillors was established in 2022, and since then, a number of meetings have been held to explore various options for the future of the pool.
The pool which was built in 1973 by the Tenby Swimming Pool Trust and was subsequently incorporated into the town’s council leisure centre, is well used by residents, schools, clubs and visitors.
“From the outset, my preference has been to build a new leisure centre at a different location. This would have allowed the current site to remain operational until the new centre was completed, after which the old centre could be demolished and the site potentially repurposed for much-needed social housing,” said Cllr Rhys Jordan, county councillor for the wards of St Florence and St Mary Out Liberty, in providing an update.
“However, given the significant cost implications and the current financial climate, this option is now very unlikely to proceed.
“We all recognise that the current pool is nearing the end of its operational life. It has been a fantastic facility for over 50 years, and despite its fairly basic construction, it has provided immense value to our community.
“Given the circumstances, the current preferred option in terms of cost and practicality is to refurbish the existing pool. This will extend its lifespan and provide us with more time to consider a more long-term solution.
“Residents will know that I am passionate about our swimming pool. I campaigned in 2022 for a new pool and remain steadfast in my commitment to this cause.
“As a coastal area, it is essential that we have a pool where our children can learn to swim in a safe environment, and where residents can take care of their physical and mental health. For many, the pool is a lifeline for various personal reasons.
“I will continue to advocate for the improvement of our leisure facilities and will keep residents informed of any major updates or developments,” he added.
