There’s been a further cash blow to the town of Tenby with news of another ATM being removed.
An application from Barclays Bank Plc to remove signage and the ATM from its former premises at 18 High Street, came before members of Tenby Town Council’s planning committee when they met around the table recently.
Barclays Bank confirmed plans in the summer to shut its Tenby branch on High Street with the ‘cash point’ located to the rear of the premises on Upper Frog Street.
The clerk told members of the committee, that as the bank was now closed, the ATM would no longer be serviced.
Cllr Trevor Hallett said that it would be a shame to lose another cashpoint for the seaside town, as not everyone carried credit cards.
Members said that whilst they regret the loss of the ATM, they felt that the work was required in light of the bank closing.
Tenby Civic Society’s planning committee said that it had no objections to the removal of signage, if the branch closes, but members were concerned at the loss of the ATM as there would only be two 24hr ATMs in Tenby, with another two located inside shops.
“Three ATM’s have gone in recent years, and the fewer ATM’s often run out of cash on busy weekends, as re-supply doesn’t match Tenby’s peak visitor times,” remarked Harry Gardiner.
“Some businesses require cash payment only. Bank branches closing without a combined multi-bank branch/facility to replace them is an unsatisfactory loss of services in Tenby’s town centre. Closure conflicts with LDP policy 2(c ) - in the loss of a local commercial service,” he added.
Lloyds TSB, Nat West and Santander have all departed Tenby in recent years, with HSBC announcing at the end of November that they too are to pull out of Tudor Square.
With HSBC closing next year, just one cashpoint located outside the Tesco Express store will be available inside the walled town.
