Wax those boards, paint those placards, get your swimsuits on, and get ready to make waves and take a stand against sewage pollution in the biggest national day of action yet as part of the ‘Paddle Out Protests’ being held in May - with a Pembrokeshire beach once again playing its part in the campaign.
Make sure to get the date of Saturday, May 17, in your diary - as campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) will be hosting a national ‘Paddle Out Protest’ happening all on the same day, all over the UK.
Protests will be popping up on rivers, lakes and beaches demonstrating to the Government, along with water companies such as Dŵr Cymru, and regulators like Natural Resources Wales the will to stand up for people’s rights to clean water!
One such beach will be Broad Haven in Pembrokeshire, with the event due to take place from 2.30 pm.
Last year, the same spot in Pembrokeshire saw crowds of protestors made up of surfers, cold water swimmers, kayakers, paddle boarders, coasteering companies, divers, lifeguards, and regular beach-going families taking to the beach on a sunny weekend, with the message of ‘enough is enough, cut the crap!’
A spokesperson for the Pembrokeshire protest said: “We are a team of five and are working our socks off to make this a day to remember, and more importantly to bring about change and improvement for our local and national water quality.
“Give SAS and SAS Cymru a 'like' on your socials and start checking in with what you can do before the paddle out to help put the pressure on politicians and water companies.
“Get in touch with us if you can help make banners ahead of time, volunteer as a qualified first aider, put up bunting and stands, help on our stand chatting to people, anything to make it go smoothly on the day!”
A spokesperson for Surfers Against Sewage stated: “We are more than surfers, more than sewage. We're calling on all environmentalists and all water lovers across the UK to join us at lakes, beaches and rivers to shout from the shores, paddle out or paddle in to stand up for the ocean and our rivers.
“People from all corners of the nation must come together to show the people in power the tidal wave of support there is backing an end to sewage pollution.
“Our latest Water Quality Report reveals that sewage is being dumped into our rivers and seas on a scale that defies belief—and the people who should be stopping it are cashing in instead.
“While private water companies handed £1.2 billion to shareholders, they also dumped 4.7 million hours of sewage into our waterways in 2024. That’s 592,478 spills in just one year.
“At the same time, water bills are rising, targets are being missed, and public trust is circling the drain. Over a quarter of adults in England are so fed up, they’ve considered not paying their water bills.
“Our latest ‘Water Quality Report’ lays it all bear!” they added.
