Pembrokeshire County Council has issued a warning over fake QR codes being placed on machines across some of the county’s car parks - after scammers targeted Tenby’s multi-storey.

Across the UK fraudsters have been placing QR codes on car parking signage and payment machines.

“Pembrokeshire County Council does NOT use QR codes for payment at car parks. The Council uses PayByPhone as an alternative to cash payments. Please ensure you download the genuine app, do not use a QR code but search your app store,” stated the Local Authority.

“The Council and its enforcement partner does NOT request or issue parking fines via text message.”

One member of the public using the county council run multi-storey car park in Tenby this Easter holiday, spotted a fake QR sticker, sharing on social media: “Be careful guys when paying by phone in the car parks I visited. Parked in the multi-storey car park, scanned my phone to pay and it tried to take £59.99 out my bank - luckily I noticed and reported it straight away so be careful people.”
