A judo club has secured £1,000 funding from Wales’ biggest housebuilder Persimmon Homes.

Pembroke Judo Club was awarded the cash as part of Persimmon Homes’ West Wales Community Champions scheme.

The club, which has over 25 students, will use the funds to replace mats that have become worn and dangerous.

Paul Barnikel, coach at Pembroke Judo Club, applied for the funding to cover the cost of the much-needed mats to offer safety and protection for students and says the club needs to raise over £4,000 to cover this cost.

Paul said: “We are extremely grateful to Persimmon Homes West Wales for this generous donation, which will go a long way towards replacing our old mats.

“Our 25 students really value the club, which helps them to keep fit, meet new people and learn new skills.”

Sharon Robinson, sales director at Persimmon Homes West Wales, said: “Pembroke Judo Club displayed all the qualities needed to be a Community Champion.

“Their contribution to sport in the local area is crucial and we wanted to help support their cause.

“As always it was a difficult decision to select our Community Champions, but I would encourage any charity or organisation that missed out this time, even if they have won previously, to apply again.”
