Pembroke Town Walls Trust has received a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant of £9,720 for an exciting heritage project, Pembroke Town Walls and Beyond.
Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project focuses on involving and including a wider range of local people in the heritage of Pembroke’s medieval town walls, through not only improving understanding of the history of the walls and their international importance as an historic site, but also helping and encouraging people to learn how the walls were built and can be maintained for future generations.
Supported through The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project will enable local people to discover the origins and explore the history of the walled town, how the walls defended it and their links with the Castle. Wall owners and local people will be offered short courses in essential repair and maintenance of their walls, and how to apply for Listed Building Consent.
The grant will enable the Trust to engage more directly with the wider community through both printed and social media, making use of all types of communication to promote the training and other events. These will include guided tours of the walled town and presenting talks and podcasts for local people on Pembroke’s role within the history of South Pembrokeshire.
Commenting on the award, Elizabeth Gossage, Chair of the Trustees of the Pembroke Town Walls Trust, said: “We are thrilled to have received this support thanks to the National Lottery players and pleased to be able to engage more fully with the community of all ages by taking this two way approach to help them to understand more about the history of the town, why the walls were built and how so that they can repair and care for them into the future.”
Director of The National Lottery Heritage Fund in Wales, Andrew White, added: “We’re pleased to award this funding to enable the people of South Pembrokeshire to take an active role in preserving the heritage of their community. This is a great example of the impact heritage has on people’s lives and how coming together can benefit everyone.”
