The Observer has followed the progress of Pembroke Dock’s own Roly Poly, a magnificent bird built by families in Pembroke Dock to celebrate the Roald Dahl centenary year.
This weekend - on the afternoons of September 17 and 18, in Bute Park, it will be a centrepiece in the Cardiff City of the Unexpected event.
The mission given to Pembroke Dock was to build something big, bold and memorable and to do it in just five working days. What a week that was! Dozens of local families came to Pembroke Dock Community School, fashioned their feathers and we ended up with something rather lovely.
Wales Millennium Centre education manager Elan Isaac said: “It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with the creative, enthusiastic and hard working community of Pembroke Dock in this rather wondercrump project to celebrate Roald Dahl ready for our city wide celebration, City of the Unexpected. From the word go families of all shapes and sizes embraced the activity, pulled up their sleeves and got stuck in. It would not have been possible without the amazing team at Pembroke Dock Communities First and artist Louis Okwedy and Ivan Black so a huge thank you to them but more importantly to the families that came to take part and for giving real character to our marvellous Roly Poly Bird!”
After the Weekend of the Unexpected, the bird will shake a tail feather and return home to Pembroke Dock to show off - first in the library and later at Pembroke Dock Community School.
