Twenty intrepid voyagers took to the sea in kayaks at the weekend in aid of charity. The volunteers - 17 of them Pembrokeshire County Council employees - braved swells and strong currents to paddle from the resort town of Tenby, around Caldey Island and back for Breast Cancer Care Wales. Led by sea kayak coach Dave Thom, who had earlier trained the volunteers in paddling skills and safety drills, the expedition set out on Sunday morning in double sea kayaks provided by Ocean Rock Coastal Kayak Expeditions. They were joined by experienced paddlers from Haverfordwest Kayak Club, who provided support and safety cover. Despite difficult conditions, the voyagers completed their journey in five hours. Each raised at least £50 in sponsorship and it is hoped the venture will eventually raise over £1,500 for the cancer charity. Organiser Philip Williams said: "We had a great paddle and after a lot of effort arrived safely back in Tenby. I was very impressed by the way the complete beginners coped with the conditions. "We were all pleased to have this opportunity to help Cancer Care. Everyone taking part had a special reason to want to support Breast Cancer Care Wales, which does great work helping people affected by the illness."
