The number of Welsh trains affected by partial or full cancellations has consistently risen over the past three years, according to government figures.

Accident Claims Advice (https://www.accidentclaimsadvice.org.uk/) reviewed five years’ worth of records from the Office of Rail and Road, finding that 1,447,680 trains were partly or fully cancelled between April 2019 and April 2024.

A full-cancelled train is one which runs less than half of its planned journey, or none at all. A partly cancelled train completes its journey but misses at least one planned station.

In England and Wales, one in every 20 trains scheduled across 2023/24 did not complete its intended route. Of those, 44% were noted as full cancellations, meaning that 140,834 sets of travellers either saw their train miss numerous stations or not arrive at all.

Transport for Wales Rail (the main operator in Wales) was unable to complete the full route with 6.9% of its services. 10,301 trains were considered ‘part cancelled’, with 11,492 (3.6% of all trains) logged as ‘full-cancelled’.

Cancellations have continued rising over the past five years, with the exception of the Covid-affected 2020/21 period, where the overall number of trains plummeted.

75% more trains were partially or fully cancelled in 2023/24 than in 2019/20.

Additionally, Welsh commuters were 17.5% more likely to see a TfW service miss at least one station than in 2022/23.

Over the past five years, TfW’s cancellation rate sits at 5.1%, a figure higher than the British average of 4.2%. 72,865 trains were affected in total.

Great Western Railway, which also operates in Wales, has performed better than the national average across the past five years. 3.7% of all trains have been partially or fully cancelled, although that rate spiked at 5.6% in 2023/24.

10,080 trains only completed half their expected route at most last year - 1,412 fewer than TfW Rail, despite Great Western putting on over 200,000 more trains.

Only TransPennine and Northern Trains pre-cancelled more services than TfW Rail in 2023/24.
