A large gathering of family and friends attended the funeral of Mr. Mike Crockford, of Kista Dan, Lady Park, Tenby. Mike, who was 69, passed away peacefully at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, on Thursday, March 13, after being taken ill at home with tragic suddenness. Beloved husband of Liz, he was the much-loved father of Stephen and Darren, cherished grandfather of Nell and Marilla and brother of Roger. He was predeceased by his brother Christopher in 1986. Born in Tenby in 1938 to a large seafaring family, Mike was the son of the late Ivor and Marjorie Crockford. The sea was in Mike's blood and he spent his early years growing up around the harbour. As a youngster, he founded the Harbour Sports Club, which had Charles Birt as its president. At the age of 19, Mike went on an expedition to the Antarctic to live on a scientific base - a daunting but awe-inspiring experience for a teenager. On his journey south, the RRS Shackleton was holed by an iceberg. Luckily, all the crew were saved and transferred to a rescue ship, the Kista Dan, an Antarctic supply ship. The incident made front page news in the national newspapers... Mike and Liz later named their home Kista Dan after the vessel. After two-and-a-half years, Mike returned to Tenby for the summer before going back to the Antarctic once more. Mike then went to college in Newport, where he qualified as a radio officer and also made some lifelong friends. Mike had his own boat built at Saundersfoot which he named the Polar Star. He operated it between Tenby and Caldey during the summer season. During the winter, he returned to travel the world with the Merchant Navy. Mike married Liz in 1969 and they have two sons, Stephen and Darren. Mike founded the Harbour Hurricanes, a football club for the youngsters. Such was its popularity and the enthusiasm of the budding footballers that Mike ended up with three teams and he had to recruit fund-raisers and helpers, who together raised enough money to purchase a van to take the boys to matches. Mike took over the family business, 'Coastal and Island Cruises', from his father. This is now owned by his son Stephen. Mike was a stalwart member of Tenby Lifeboat and spent 27 years as a radio officer. He also founded the Tenby Lifeboat Crew Association. After years travelling the world in the Merchant Navy, Mike joined Sealink Ferries, which ran between Fishguard and Rosslare. These were very happy times and, once again, his cheerful and outgoing personality saw him make many more friends. As well as his love of the sea, Mike was also passionate about bowls. He was a hard-working member of Tenby Bowling Club for about 30 years. He worked tirelessly for the club in many different capacities. He was a past secretary, a current trustee and played a major part in developing the pavilion and the extension which the club has today. He was also past captain of his beloved Five Arches team and had been club captain for the last six years. He was also instrumental in promoting junior bowls, especially the development of taster sessions for local schoolchildren. Mike qualified as a bowls coach and gave a lot of his time to the juniors, who will sorely miss his enthusiasm and encouragement. It was a fitting tribute that a number of the juniors were in attendance at his funeral. As well as being club captain, Mike was more recently the club's press officer, writing the weekly Bowlers Corner column, complete with his own amusing anecdotes, for the Observer. As club president, Bert Barnikel, said in a letter to his wife Liz: 'Mike's leadership will be a hard act to follow'. How true that is. Another one of Mike's great loves was rugby. He was a proud Welshman. If only he could have watched Wales win the Grand Slam. He also enjoyed music and he had an eclectic taste, from Country and Western to Wagner. Mike spent a lot of his time walking and was proud of his achievement of completing the Pembrokeshire Coast Path walk with his friends and bowling colleagues, Gwyn Beynon and the late Ken Hewlings, in 2000. Mike was a very caring, generous, unselfish man, who helped a great deal of people in his life. He found great peace and happiness after moving to Lady Park. Tragically, he passed away before he had enough time to enjoy it. Mike's hero in life was Ernest Shackleton and in many ways he tried to live up to his ideals. Mike will be sadly missed by Liz, Steve, Darren, Nell, Marilla and Roger, together with his many friends. The funeral took place at St. Mary's Church, Tenby, on Tuesday, March 25. The Rector, Rev. Andrew Davies officiated. Moving tributes were paid by friend County Councillor Meic Williams and bowling colleague Paul Diment. Bearers were bowling club members Dai Spencer (secretary), Paul Diment, Gwyn Beynon and Peter Hooper. On entering and leaving the church, a guard of honour was formed by members of both Tenby Lifeboat crew and Tenby Bowling Club. The service was followed by interment at Tenby New Cemetery. There were family floral tributes only. Flowers for the house and plants for the garden were received from: Yvonne, Meic and family; Kevin Thomas; Bert and Pauline; Irene Delahunty; Tenby Bridge Club; Kate and Emily; Glen and Sharon Bowen; colleagues at Stenaline, Fishguard Harbour; May and Liam; Jenny and Alan; Pam Subbiani; Audrey and Norman Evans; Betty Day; Roma; Winifred, Ceris and John; Phyl Morgan; Marnie and Ben; Alison, Carl, Gary and Fred; Mags Davis; Peter and Liz Radford; Lorraine and Nigel; Helen, Dai and Molly; Joan and Tom Osborne; Jenny and Mike Webb; Peter Thomas; Mair Evans; Ann Follon; Maureen and Alan Shepherd; Peter and Betty Hooper; Helen and Dave Morgan; Audrey Owens; Vena and Richard; Nesta and Peter; Maggie and John Joseph; Angharad, Elizabeth, Bryn and John; Christine and Christopher; Kenny and Anita; Gwyn and Betty; Sandra Parker; John and Jill O'Sullivan; Enid and family; Robert and Moira Thomas.
