MRS. M. M. G. JENKINS

NARBERTH

The funeeral took place recently of Mrs. Margaret Mary Gay Jenkins, of Northfield Road, Narberth, who passed away at Morriston Hospital, Swansea, on December 1. She was 69.

A native of Narberth, Margaret was mainly a housewife and mum. She began her working career in the 1960s as a typist at James Williams Brewers, Narberth.

She had also been a secretary/receptionist at E and C Rewinds. Margaret also worked as a Breakfast Club and lunchtime supervisor at Narberth CP School.

Her final career move was a part-time librarian assistant at Narberth Library; she was heading to work in the library on the day of her passing.

Her main interests were socialising with family and friends, befriending anyone and everyone. She had a love of all things craft, sewing, crochet, cross-stitch, but number one was her knitting.

She loved her sons, grandchildren, family and friends. Her greatest pal was Bertie the dog, who would often be seen at her side.

She loved Daniel O’Donnell, Cliff Richard and ABBA, and her favourite TV programme was ‘The Chase’ as she loved crosswords, quizzes and puzzles. She also loved the film/musical ‘Mary Poppins’.

Predeceased by her husband Mr. Derrick James Jenkins in 1996, she leaves to mourn her sons Adrian Jenkins, Andrew Jenkins and Matthew Jenkins; sister Miss Geraldine Cole; grandchildren Tabitha Jenkins and Seren Jenkins; cousins and relatives too numerous to mention.

MR. B. T. HODDER

NEW HEDGES

As reported previously, the death occurred suddenly on December 5 of Mr. Brian Thomas Hodder, of Knightston Close, New Hedges. He was 80.

Mr. Hodder was well-known in the Tenby area as a milk retailer, delivering to customers from 1963 until his retirement in 2001.

Mr. Hodder was born in Ely, Cardiff, in 1936. As a boy, he played for Cardiff Boys and was an avid music fan. He ran the local Youth Club, taking along his 78 records and his record player in a wheelbarrow so the young people could enjoy some of his favourite music.

He started his working life delivering bread in Cardiff and at the age of 17 he met his future wife June. Mr. Hodder did National Service, joining the Welsh Regiment when he was 18. He served in Pembroke Dock in the Motor Transport section and it was during this time that Mr. Hodder came to love Pembrokeshire. When he and his wife June married in 1959, they also spent their honeymoon in Tenby.

Mr. and Mrs. Hodder and their young children moved to New Hedges in 1963 after Mr. Hodder placed an advert in the Western Mail, looking to buy a coal or milk round.

He purchased a milk round and by 1965, Mr. Hodder had bought a new Bedford lorry which became a familiar sight around Tenby, carrying thousands of crates of milk over the years.

Mr. Hodder also used the vehicle to help people move house and it carried Brownies and Guides on the back during many Tenby Firemen’s Carnivals. It also helped local Scout groups transport equipment during annual camping trips in the area.

Mr. Hodder truly enjoyed his work delivering milk, interacting with customers and the team at Craig’s Dairy. He loved being out in the morning, whatever the weather.

He also became a part of the local community - he was chairman and member of the Trustees of Tenby Charities; a member of the New Hedges Village Hall Committee, helping to renovate the old school into the new Village Hall.

He supported the ATC and the Scouts and Guides. He loved to be with his family, on the beach or out in the countryside of Pembrokeshire.

He also spent many happy hours on Castle Beach and on Broad Haven South, making the most of the sea and sun after a morning delivering milk.

Mr. Hodder retired in 2001 and was inundated with gifts and messages from customers and friends. He still woke up at 2 am for many years, the early starts staying with him, but he thoroughly enjoyed his retirement. He loved gardening, feeding the birds, listening to the radio, doing some DIY.

He enjoyed many lovely holidays all over the world and spent time visiting his children over the years.

He and June were thrilled to become grandparents and they enjoyed being closely involved in their grandsons’ lives, watching them grow up and driving miles to see them play football and rugby on Saturday mornings.

Mr. Hodder and his wife June celebrated their Golden Wedding in 2009 surrounded by family and friends. In 2016, they both turned 80 and were joined by family and friends for warm and happy celebrations.

Mr. Hodder lived life to the full - the day before he died he was out with June and his next door neighbours, being driven along the Pembrokeshire coast and enjoying the scenery.

He will be greatly missed by his wife June, children Seth, Samantha and Rhian, grandsons Dylan and Zachary and all their family and friends.

The funeral took place on Wednesday, December 14.

Donations, if desired, can be made to Friends of the Community or Coronary Care Unit, Withybush Hospital, c/o funeral directors, W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd, The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby.

MRS. J. HODGES

TENBY

The death occurred peacefully at home on December 31 of Mrs. Joan Hodges, of The Norton, Tenby.

Aged 85, she was a much loved mother to Susan, Simon and David and mother-in-law to Shan and Pam.

The private funeral service will take place today (Friday) at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth.

All of Joan’s friends are invited to join the family to remember and celebrate her life at the Fourcroft Hotel, Tenby, from 4 pm.

There will be family flowers only, with donations, if so desired, for Paul Sartori Foundation c/o E. C. Thomas and Son, Funeral Directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narberth, who are conducting the funeral arrangements.

Joan was born in Palmers Green, North London, on December 11, 1931. Like many children, she was evacuated from the city during the Second World War, fortunately this was arranged to be to a family that knew Joan’s, these were the Hodges family in Tenby who shared business connections. As fate would have it, their eldest son Geoff was to become her husband.

Joan was extremely proud of raising money for the Air Ministry to help build Spitfires and treasured a number of letters she received from the Ministry in 1942 and 1943 thanking her for her efforts

Following the end of the war she moved back to Surrey to finish her schooling and go on to work in the City as a secretary. In 1954, she married Geoff, by then a Royal Navy Submariner, in Oxted, Surrey

In 1958, Geoff was posted to Australia for two years, so Joan decided to follow with their two then infant children, Sue and Simon. They embarked on a six-week journey by ship to join him where they lived at Manly on Sydney’s North Shore.

On returning from Australia, the family moved back to Tenby to the Bungalow in the Dunes on South Beach, affectionately known to all as ‘The Bung’.

In early 1964, Geoff was posted to Halifax, Nova Scotia; whilst he was on route to Halifax, their third child David was born.

Joan was always an active and busy person; she and her late sister-in-law Annis Phillips dug (by hand) a trench for the replacement water supply to ‘The Bung’ from the bottom of the Golf Club hill.

In 1966, the family moved to Fareham, Hampshire, until Geoff finished his career in the Royal Navy in 1969. They returned to ‘The Bung’ until 1971, then moving into their final home on the Norton.

Having a permanent base gave Joan the chance to gradually establish her glorious garden, in which she favoured a wild country cottage garden style. She loved spending time working and sitting in the garden and attended many agricultural and flower shows, always on the lookout for something new to grow.

Joan was easily recognisable, in her colourful and bright scarves and berets, walking through town almost every day to join her many friends for coffee and a chat.

She relished all things to do with food, going out with friends for meals and was a regular supporter of Friday morning’s local WI market. She also loved to cook for any occasion, whether it be fish, shellfish or game, all provided by Geoff and the boys.

Joan was a dedicated fundraiser for the RNLI, and was awarded a silver badge in 1995 in recognition of her many years of service. Geoff had been a lifeboat crew member for many years and a regular harbour fixture before his death in 1996.

In addition to her travelling with Geoff, Joan loved to travel for pleasure. She would ‘pop-up’ to London several times a year for exhibitions and catch up with friends in the home counties, also enjoying visits to many historical buildings and gardens throughout the UK. There were also holidays in Europe and the Far East.

She especially enjoyed regular solo visits to daughter Sue who had moved permanently to Australia in 1991, her last trip there being in 2014. An enthusiastic traveller, she would pass on experiences, knowledge and advice to any and all that might benefit, in her easy sharing manner.

A lover of animals, particularly horses and dogs, she sponsored puppies in training for the Guide Dogs for the Blind for the last few years. She enjoyed taking the family dogs walking in the local countryside and on beaches all over South Pembrokeshire, especially if there was a tea-room nearby.

Everyone who knew Joan will remember her cheerful disposition, inquiring mind, good manners, and her stoical and positive outlook. She was always pleasant and engaging company.

She leaves family and many friends around the world, they will remember her with great love and affection, and she will be dearly missed.
