Mrs. E. D. Hodgson
LEEDS
(formerly of Tenby)
Evelyn Doreen Hodgson (always known as Doreen), moved from Cardiff to Tenby in early 1952 with her husband Alan and daughter Elaine. They moved into the house on St. John’s Croft, where Doreen lived for the next 56 years. Alan died in 2004.
Doreen and Alan were regular worshippers at Sunday services at St. Mary’s until they were elderly and Doreen has received ‘at home communion’ both in Tenby and Leeds.
Doreen was a member of Young Wives and then of Mothers’ Union, which she joined in 1958. She was still an ‘at home member’ of the local branch in Leeds.
Whilst residing in Tenby, Doreen was a staunch and active member of the Townswomen’s Guild and had served as secretary, treasurer , chairwoman and lastly president.
Doreen was keen on handicraft of many kinds, including baking, knitting, crochet, dressmaking, sewing, tapestry, embroidery, and oil painting. Her hobbies also included reading, gardening, jigsaws and listening to music.
When her sight became too poor to manage her many hobbies, Doreen enjoyed talking with other people, keeping in touch with old friends and with relatives on the ’phone or listening to talking books, the radio and some programmes on the television.
Doreen and Alan loved to drive around the Pembrokeshire countryside and spent many happy hours out exploring with the dog, a flask of tea and a biscuit or two.
In 2007, aged 90 and finding it increasingly difficult to manage on her own, even with the help of kindly neighbours and good friends, Doreen made the decision to move to Leeds to be near her family.
Doreen missed Tenby, her friends and her life there very much. But being a brave and determined lady, she managed very well in her bungalow, with daily visits from her daughter Elaine and made many new friends who visited regularly. She was also attended by an excellent team of carers, many of whom she became very fond. However, eventually the loss of her sight and mobility and a deterioration in her general health necessitated a move into a nursing home at the end of April this year, in order for her to receive 24-hour care.
Unfortunately, Doreen’s general health continued to deteriorate and she passed away, with her daughter Elaine and her granddaughter Penny at her side and holding her hands, and her son-in-law Mike nearby, on August 17, just 11 days short of her 100th birthday.
She leaves to mourn daughter Elaine, son-in-law Mike, grandson Darren and his wife Jo, granddaughter Penny and her husband Mick, and great-grandchildren are Megan and Ben.
The funeral service takes place in St. Mary’s Parish Church, Whitkirk, Leeds, at 1.30 pm on August 31, followed by interment at Tenby New Cemetery, 11 am, Friday, September 2, with a graveside service.
The family request no flowers at the funeral service in Leeds as it would be difficult transporting to Tenby without fading. There will be family flowers only.
Flowers for interment or donations in lieu, if desired, made payable to either RNLI Tenby or Guide Dogs for Blind may be sent to funeral directors, W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd., The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, or Landsker House, 21 Station Road, Narberth.
