Mr. E. J. Carlan and Mrs. J. M. Carlan

Stepaside

The funeral services took place recently of husband and wife, Mr. Edward John Carlan and Mrs. Joan Mary Carlan

Mr. Carlan, known as John, aged 88, passed away on January 3, at Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen.

Mrs. Carlan, who was 87, passed away on December 25, at Woodfield Nursing Home, Narberth.

John trained as a horologist, he joined the RAF and was posted to Aden. He worked for Harwell Atomic Research Centre, then moved to Didcot Power Station before being transferred to Pembroke Power Station, retiring at the age of 55. His interests were motorsport, gardening and hiking.

Joan started work at Great Western Railway at the signal box. She also worked as a butcher’s roundswoman with deliveries, a taxi driver in Oxfordshire, a shop assistant at the wine merchant, at Wallingford Hydraulic Centre, where she did clerical work, and at Didcot Power Station in the planning office. Her interests were gardening, travelling and learning languages.

Joan and John were both born in Islington, where they met and married in 1953. They had three children and built their first home in North Moreton, Oxfordshire. After many happy family holidays in Pembrokeshire, they decided to move to Stepaside. Both were keen gardeners, loved to travel and were devoted to their family. They will both be sadly missed by all who knew them.

Family left to mourn: Paul and Jacqui (daughter) Fairclough, Janet (daughter) and Alistair Murdoch, Aidan (son) and Jenny, Conor and Shanon, Amy (grandchildren), Harvey (great-grandchild).

GODFREY DUNCAN JONES

STEPASIDE

Godfrey Jones died peacefully at home on Sunday, January 14. He was 89.

Born in Tonyrefail, Glamorgan, Godfrey attended Ysgol Gymraeg Tonyrefail, Tonyrefail Grammar School, and Cheltenham Grammar School where he obtained his school certificate in eight subjects and started playing his beloved rugby (back row), a sport and passion that stayed with him for the rest of his life.

On leaving school, and pursuing a life working in government pensions, he strode down the street and joined the Welsh Guards in 1946 and spent the next seven years, serving all over colonial Africa and the Middle East, some of the best years of his life. He used to joke that, wherever he served, there’s been nothing, but trouble ever since.

It was in Fayid, Egypt, that he met a beautiful WRAF at a dance, who just happened to be from Swansea, his beloved Margaret. It was love at first sight. They married a year later, and a year after that, welcomed their son Michael into the world.

Following his years with the Welsh Guards, Godfrey joined the Metropolitan Police, C Division, in 1953, and he and Margaret welcomed daughter Denise and son David.

In 1958, the family moved to Stepaside, Pembrokeshire, the call to return to Wales - ‘hiraeth’ - proving too strong. Godfrey worked for over 30 years at MOD Pendine, retiring as section head of DAPS (Data Acquisition and Processing Section). In 1988, he was awarded the Imperial Service Medal for meritorious services, a fitting tribute for a lifetime of service to his country.

He joined the RAOB, Kilgetty 7893, in July, 1959, and was a lifelong member, serving as PG secretary from 1980 to 1986.

Godfrey’s passion, after his wife and family, was rugby. He played for the Welsh Guards in Egypt, for the Met Police in London, and for Neyland, hanging up his boots at age 35. Thereafter (and before!), he made the pilgrimage to Cardiff Arms Park regularly with his butties to support his beloved Wales, and to Ireland, England, and Scotland when the opportunity presented itself.

His interests included travelling (19 countries); his beautiful garden in Stepaside, where he planted a tree for each of his family, and cryptic crossword puzzles, the difficult ones, which he would solve assiduously.

Godfrey had an eidetic memory and was known as ‘the historian,’ and as the ‘walking encyclopedia,’ by his friends. He read voraciously, loved politics, economics, and history, and believed education an obligation for all progressive nations. Witty in all things, he saw the upside of any situation, and was renowned for his ‘valley’ banter.

Predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret, Godfrey will be greatly missed by his children Michael (Jeannie), Denise (Ian), and David (Ginny); his eight grandchildren Eleanor (James), Rowena (Ed), Thomas, James (Vicki), Robert (Lisa), Rhiannon (Sasha), Anna, and Alexander; and his two great-granddaughters, Shanti and Imogen; and by close friends Jan and Alan, Mel and Polo, Troy and Lyn, and Cliff.

The full Buffs funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, on Tuesday, January 30, conducted by Rev. Huw George, with representatives attending from all branches of the government in which Godfrey served.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Stepaside Community Primary School, c/o E. C. Thomas and Son, funeral directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg.

Mr. D. H. Griffiths

Amroth

The funeral took place recently of Mr. Dennis Haydn Griffiths, of Aitrang, Amroth. Aged 85, he passed away on January 5 at Withybush Hospital.

Dennis was the youngest of eight brothers and sisters born to Arthur and Elizabeth Griffiths at Step Cottage, Wiseman’s Bridge, in December 1932. He went to the old Stepaside School and left at 14 years of age, to begin working with Thomas and Waters in Narberth at Cox Hill during the freezing cold winter of 1946-47.

Over the years, he completed his building indentures qualifications and then joined the Army to complete his National Service, signing up for three years, when he found that would be more beneficial. He was attached to the Royal Army Service Corps and then Air Despatch (55 company), sailing to Singapore on the Empire Pride. Many of the air drops were in the jungle, Borneo and surrounding areas.

When he returned from Army life, he married and settled down to family life in Saundersfoot and the birth of his daughter, Jane. There is evidence of his working life as a general builder both in and around the locality of Saundersfoot.

Since 1982, Dennis has lived in Amroth, and although a builder, probably never really retired. He had more time to enjoy the love of his life, prawning, always exploring new bays around the Pembrokeshire coast. However, nothing gave him greater pleasure than to go to Wiseman’s Bridge.

He greatly enjoyed all chain-saw activities, logging etc. and also enjoyed a wide range of sport on the TV. Nothing was more important to him than his family and he truly adored his daughter, Jane and grandsons, Aaron and Elliot, who gave him the most tremendous pleasure.

The funeral took place on Friday, January 19, at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth. Left to mourn are his immediate family and large extended family, with many nieces, nephews and their families in attendance, together with many friends and acquaintances, displaying the affection with which Dennis is remembered.

There were immediate family flowers, with donations in lieu, if so desired, for Saundersfoot Medical Centre, which may be sent c/o E. C. Thomas and Son, funeral directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg.

Mr. GRAHAM DONEY

EAST WILLIAMSTON

Mr. Graham Doney, of Green Meadow Close, East Williamston, passed away peacefully at Withybush Hospital on Tuesday, January 23. He was 68.

A native of Liverpool, he had made Pembrokeshire his home for many years. A career in teaching took him first to Jamaica as a VSO, which is where he met his wife Mina. They recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

Five years at a school on the Bahamian island of Andros followed and then many more years in the capital, Nassau.

On returning to the UK he worked locally as a primary school teacher, first on supply and then full time at Penally. He rose to the post of acting head until the school’s closure, when he transferred to Angle VC School as headmaster. Many generations of children, who affectionately called him ‘Mr. D’, will be forever grateful for his inspired teaching and wise guidance.

Graham was a man who had many talents and wide interests. He could turn his hand to practical home renovation, car restoration and the finer points of computing. He took up dinghy racing some years ago and was a member of Tenby Sailing Club. He had recently joined a pottery course.

Graham was much involved in local events and served on the committee of East Williamston Community and Hall Association. He researched details of equipment to improve the hall facilities and offered sound practical advice on maintenance.

He was first and foremost, however, a loving and committed family man, always involved in helping and guiding his children in every way possible and immensely proud of them and of his wife Mina. Close friends were welcomed into his life as extended family members, with the warmth and generosity of spirit which were characteristics of his kind nature.

Graham leaves to mourn his wife Mina, mother Doris, daughters Janine and Jenna and son Elliot, sister Averil and grandson Rudy, as well as sons-in-law Matty and Alex, brother-in-law George, nephews Graham and David and countless close friends.

A service will take place in Penally Church on Friday, February 9, at 11 am, followed by internment in Tenby cemetery. There will be family flowers only but donations in memory may be sent c/o W. & M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd., The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby SA70 8AB.
