Mr. G. R. Hughes

Tenby

Graham Rowe Hughes, aged 90, passed away peacefully, at home, on December 29.

Born in Pentlepoir, Graham attended Greenhill School in Tenby.

Graham left to join the Royal Navy and served on HMS Glasgow, as well as shore stations in Bombay and Trincomalee.

Following the Royal Navy, Graham joined the Union Castle Line, and had happy memories of the round Africa service, and met his wife-to-be Margaret in Cape Town. This past Boxing Day, Graham and Margaret, who survives him, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Whilst still in the merchant navy, Graham bought Squibbs Studios from Arthur Squibbs. Graham not only learnt photography from Arthur Squibbs, he also gained the nickname known by many - ‘Mr. Squibbs’ or ‘Squibbo’.

For many years, Graham was a feature of local life, photographing mayoral portraits to Boxing Day hunt meetings, and everything between. Graham never officially retired, and delighted in having photographed three generations of weddings for numerous families.

In later years, afternoons would invariably find Graham working at the bottom of his garden, but always ready to discuss the finer points of growing with fellow gardeners leaning over the wall.

Graham was a quiet and generous man, and his many acts of kindness to those less fortunate, were done without fuss. His abiding philosophy which he lived by, and which he attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, was - ‘there is enough in the world for the needy, but not for the greedy’.

The funeral service was held at St. Teilo’s Catholic Church, on Wednesday, January 10, officiated by Father Owen McGreal.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Paul Sartori Foundation, c/o the funeral directors, W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd., The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby.

MRS B. E. WINSTONE

TENBY

The sudden but peaceful death of Mrs. Blodwen Ellen Winstone occurred at her home in Tenby on Saturday, December 16. She was 74.

Born to Albert and Margaret Hart in December 1943, she was raised in Carew along with her older brother Dennis. On leaving school, she became a nanny, working for the Birt family, a position she looked back on fondly.

She went on to marry Brian in September 1966, and they made their home at 3 Lansdowne Cottages, St. Julians Street, Tenby. She went on to have two children of her own and became a stay at home mum and housewife, as Brian often worked away.

She later ran a successful Bed and Breakfast from her home, with visitors returning year on year, as she made it a home from home.

Blod, as she was often known, loved to walk, and would often be seen chatting to the locals and visitors alike, She also loved to bake, and adored her garden - she took delight in it being a profusion of colour.

Blodwen held her family close to her heart, and always took a keen interest in what everyone was doing, in particular her three grandsons.

Her funeral was held at Pisgah Baptist Chapel, Cresswell Quay, on January 5. The service was conducted by Rev. David Gooding, whilst the bearers were Justin and Adrian Winstone (sons) and Kevin and Ian Hart (nephews).

The family would like to thank E. C. Thomas, funeral directors, for their empathy and support, along with Rev. David Gooding for such a beautiful and heartfelt service.

Family left to mourn are: Brian (husband), Justin and Carol (son and daughter-in-law), Adrian and Catherine (son and daughter-in-law), James, Glen and Jay (grandsons), Dennis and Millie (brother and sister-in-law), Ian, Julie and Jack (nephews/nieces), Kevin (nephew), Gaynor, Blethin, Gethin and Karl (niece and nephews), Colin and Rosslyn (brother and sister-in-law), Pamela (sister-in-law), Peter (brother-in-law) and many cousins too numerous to mention.

Mrs. P. Llewellyn

Kilgetty

The funeral took place recently of Mrs. Pamela Llewellyn (Pam), of Carmarthen Road, Kilgetty.

Aged 75 years, she passed away at home on December 1.

A native of St. Clears, Pam worked with her husband running the family newsagency until late 2007.

In 2012, Pam suffered a stroke which curtailed her activities during the last years of her life.

Her main interests were socialising, baking and family life.

Family left to mourn: Tony (husband), Paul and Sheena, Shaun and Denise (sons and daughters-in-law), Rebecca (granddaughter), Poppy (great-granddaughter), Luke, Jonathan, Daniel (grandsons), Alicia (granddaughter), Ronald, Raymond and Teddy (brothers).

The funeral was held at St. Issell’s Church, Saundersfoot, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth, on December 14. Rev. Caroline Mansell officiated.

Bearers were Jonathan and Daniel (grandsons), Bradley, Curtis and Scott (nephews), Bill (family friend).

Donations for Paul Sartori Foundation and Macmillan Cancer Support, c/o E.C. Thomas and Son, funeral director, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg.

NOTICES

TONY WEBSTER

Tony Webster, who has died aged 85, was an extraordinary local man with an entrepreneurial spirit. He founded the snack bar business on Tenby’s Harbour Beach in 1959 and the furniture removals and storage business, Webster’s Removals, in 1969. He completed his national service as a Grenadier Guardsman, was an active member of the Royal British Legion and Probus. He sang with the Tenby Male Choir and was an enthusiastic vintage motorcycle restorer and rider into his early seventies.

His work saw him carry out removals from Caldey Island to the Shetland Isles and all parts of the UK in between. As a young soldier on tour of duty in Germany he was looking forward to his next posting in Cyprus, but plans quickly changed and he was sent instead to London to play his part in the funeral for King George VI. For a young man from Tenby the opportunities his army service presented were exciting. He was a much travelled man visiting: Austria, Spain, Ireland, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Romania, Switzerland and Australia. He enjoyed the camaraderie of several overseas tours with Tenby Male Choir. He eventually did visit Cyprus, on holiday with his family some 40 years later. He told us that life was “not a dress rehearsal”, and he lived it to its fullest.

He lost his wife Mary, in 2009, they were married for 53 years, and was predeceased by his brother Robert. He is survived by his sons, Andrew and Christian and his daughter Beverley; his brothers Michael and Randall and his sister Pauline. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and by his extended family and many friends.

The funeral service takes place on Thursday, January 25 at St. Mary’s Church, Tenby, 12.30 pm followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, 1.45 pm.
