Concerns continue over potential commercial cockle-picking on Saundersfoot’s beaches, although checks conducted by authorities responding to complaints have shown that no offences have taken place recently.
County councillor for the seaside village’s south ward Cllr Chris Williams has said that over the past couple of months, he has been in contact with the Fisheries Department and residents living around The Glen regarding the cockle picking and parking at very low tides, and pickers descending on the beach during the early hours of the morning.
Cllr Williams said that over the last few weeks the Fisheries Department has logged all the vehicle details of the pickers to submit a report that has been gathered for the attention of Dyfed-Powys Police, Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority, and the Food Standards Agency.
“The report written after all the information had been gathered found no evidence of any fisheries offences,” explained Cllr Williams.
“The advice from the Fisheries department is that if any resident has concerns then they should call the 101 police number and highlight any issues such as commercial gathering or persons potentially being controlled to work.
“This way the relevant agencies can deal with it,” added Cllr Williams on the matter.
