XL Club students form Years 9 and 10 recently participated in a one-day visit to Cwrt-y-Gollen Army Training Camp in Crickhowell. The army instructors put the students and staff through their paces, with emphasis placed on teamwork, increasing confidence and enjoyment. Activities included field craft and problem solving exercises, leadership skills, the assault course and jumping into a river! Ms Judi Simpson and Tammy would like to thank the students for their involvement, excellent behaviour and for getting up so very early in the morning to catch the coach.
HEESOM SHINES ON NATIONAL STAGE
Last Saturday, Chris Heesom, of Year 9, competed in the Welsh athletics finals at Brecon. Chris has been in outstanding form this year in the 800 metres with a personal best time of 2:04. He has won the Pembrokeshire Schools and Dyfed Schools Championships on his way to the Welsh finals. Chris came second, winning the silver medal and losing out to a competitor from Newport, Gwent. The race was fiercely contested, with Chris clocking the same time, 2:09, as the winner. Chris is also a very promising rugby player who has been identified by the Llanelli Scarlets. With continued effort and focus, Chris has a great sporting career ahead of him.
CRICKET
Year 8 v Dyffryn Taf: The game against Dyffryn Taf was played at Llanddewi Velfry on a hot day with a slight breeze. Greenhill won the toss and decided to bowl first. Opening bowlers Tom Davies and Steffan Davies had two wickets apiece. Also, Ceri Brace, of Year 7, had two wickets, alongside Richard Cope, who also had two wickets. Finally, Sam Harts also had two wickets, as Dyffryn Taf were all out for 53. On the batting front, Tom Davies and Richard Cope got off to a steady start. Cope then started to have a swing, hitting a few fours. Scott Newton then came on to bowl. With Tom Davies facing, his first few balls were dots, but then Davies hit a huge six onto the bank. The very next ball, Davies hit Newton for four in the same place. In the end, Davies and Cope saw it through to win by 10 wickets, ending on 57 for 0. Cope finished on 19 not out, while Davies was 27 not out. Bush played against Greenhill at Cresselly Cricket Club on a much cooler afternoon. Greenhill again won the toss and decided to bowl first. Steffan Davies had two wickets, Tom Davies had one and Ceri Brace had three wickets. It was a great bowling performance by Greenhill, restricting Bush to 45 for 6 off 20 overs. With regard to the batting performance, Richard Cope and Tom Davies got off to a steady start. Davies was then caught at mid-wicket for five. Steffan Davies joined Cope at the crease, but was out first ball, caught at mid-wicket. So Sam Harts joined Cope at the crease. Cope hit a massive six onto the bank, missing a car by two feet. Harts and Cope saw it through to get the winning total with eight overs remaining. Greenhill won by eight wickets.
