Would Like To Meet is a new play written by Christine Kempell and Hilary Handel that’s coming to The Lyric Theatre, Carmarthen, from September 28-30. WLTM is about the trials and tribulations of dating in the digital world, with a collection of hilarious true life dating disasters, embarrassing speed dating scenarios and some pretty shocking statistics.
Christine grew up in Saundersfoot, and attended school in Carmarthen. Her whole family have been involved with Carmarthen Youth Opera and The Lyric Theatre for many years. John and Margaret Morris have been with the CYO from the beginning and her sister Joanne Morris, who still lives in St. Brides Lane, is now one of the production team, having starred as Nancy in the original production of Oliver almost 40 years ago.
Christine and Hilary met over 20 years ago when they were in a production of An Evening With Gary Lineker in London’s West End and have remained friends ever since. Although they have acted together many times, WLTM is the first play they have written together.
The premier of WLTM was at the Rialto Theatre, Brighton, over the Valentine’s weekend in 2016. It was then performed as part of the Brighton Fringe Festival, May 2016. Every show has been a sellout and the original cast are thrilled to be performing in the Lyric and also hoping to repeat previous successes in this theatre.
The Lyric itself is going to look quite different for this production, as the auditorium will be set out in cabaret formation. Audiences can take their drinks from the bar into the venue to sit, drink, relax and laugh out loud as they listen to true stories that are funny, poignant, relatable and sometimes just plain weird.
Ally is looking for love before she gets too old to Tinder. Liz longs for a night of naked Jenga. David loves Grindr, but has terrible taste in men. Keith the loser thinks he’s Tom Cruise. Janet seeks solace in a drawer full of chocolate.
Christine Kempell said: “Every time WLTM is performed, we include different stories and we want new true life tales for this production. We want your readers to send their best dating stories to [email protected] or leave it on the website www.christineandhilary.wix.com/wouldliketomeet or alternatively message our Facebook page www.facebook.com/wouldlike2meet”
Hilary added: “The winner will receive two complimentary tickets to the opening night and the chance to see their story brought to life on stage. If the thought of sharing stories fills you with dread, there is another way to win a complimentary ticket to opening night and that is by liking our Facebook page, sharing the event and entering into a draw.
“There is something for everyone in WLTM,” Christine Kempell said. “Knowing every story you will hear is backed up with truth gives them all an extra sting of poignancy and humour.”
