A new footway is under construction at Saundersfoot which will link up the residential areas of Cwm Gwennol and Rhodewood House.
The Pembrokeshire County Council scheme started on site in mid-November and is being carried out by contractors Evan Pritchard.
The work, which aims to provide a safe route for pedestrians between the two locations, is programmed to continue until April 2018.
Clr. Phil Baker, County Councillor for Saundersfoot, said he was delighted that work was underway.
“This route serves many residents and visitors walking to and from Saundersfoot village, and the numbers of people currently using this walk with pushchairs and wheelchairs has long highlighted my ambition to have a dedicated footway,” he said.
The project required additional highway area to allow the improvements to advance and both the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority and the Hean Castle Estate dedicated the necessary land to enable the footway to be constructed.
Clr. Baker continued: “I would like to thank the Hean Castle Estate and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority for being extremely co-operative during the design and delivery of the project and also to Evan Pritchard Contractors and Pembrokeshire County Council Officers for bringing it to reality.”
David Lewis from the Hean Castle Estate said: “This new section of footpath has long been needed, and we were delighted to be able to reach agreement with Pembrokeshire County Council to adopt and upgrade the area of roadway through the layby and leading into Swallowtree as part of the scheme.
“The adoption of this area of roadway brings to a conclusion a long running discussion over the responsibility for it, which will now be much improved to the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors to this area.”
The 340-metre footway will also complete a missing section of a key Active Travel pedestrian route and is grant funded from Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund.
