Members of a Welsh farmers' co-operative took part in a milk relay up Snowdon last Thursday to raise awareness of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The farmers, all members of the Calon Wen dairy co-operative, based in Whitland, passed on their milk bottle baton to the summit of the mountain, in readiness for Macmillan's World's Biggest Coffee Morning events on Friday and Saturday, September 25 and 26.

On those days, Snowdon Mountain Railway will be donating profits from tea and coffee at its summit cafe - the UK's highest cafe - to Macmillan, with the milk being provided by Calon Wen.

"Our aim was to raise awareness of the Macmillan largest coffee morning fund-raising event taking place on Snowdon, and also to encourage people to get involved by holding their own coffee morning in work, at home, in a local coffee shop or anywhere where people can get together and have coffee," explained Richard Tomlinson, a Calon Wen farmer.

The farmers made it to the summit in two hours and 42 minutes where they were greeted by Macmillan's fund-raiser in North Wales, Eleri Brady.

"We had a lot of support from people on Snowdon yesterday and we're very grateful for their donations," said Richard.

"So many people are affected by cancer and we want to do something to help support Macmillan, which does so much to help sufferers and their families. Being a dairy co-operative we fit in well with the World's Biggest Coffee Morning activity and thought that we could help by promoting this and also providing the milk to a great cause."

Calon Wen will be accepting donations towards Macmillan right up to September 27. They can be posted to: Calon Wen, Unit 4, Spring Gardens, Whitland.

After last week's relay, three Calon Wen members have put their names forward to run the London Marathon in April 2010 to raise money for Macmillan.

Those who took part were Richard Tomlinson, Dave Edge, Ophelia Harbone, Elen Morris and Roger Kerr.
