Children and young people in foster care in Pembrokeshire are to benefit from a donation from Milford Haven Port. Pembrokeshire Foster Carers Association successfully applied for financial assistance to help with training and support for foster carers.

In Pembrokeshire, there are approximately 160 children currently in care, 25 of which have learning difficulties or disabilities. The funds will assist with providing educational trips, sporting equipment, access to services and respite breaks for children and carers. It is also hoped that the project will help remove the stigma associated with being in care and remove the temptation and opportunities for children to become young offenders.

Alex Allison, chairman of Pembrokeshire Foster Carers Association, welcomed the funding.

"This grant will go a long way to providing support to the children in foster care and their carers. They have come from various backgrounds and in some cases have had traumatic experiences. We can't thank MHPA enough; they are a major employer that really does have a commitment to the people of Pembrokeshire."

Community liaison officer at Milford Haven Port Stella Hooper, said: "We were delighted to award this money to Pembrokeshire Foster Carers Association, as the organisation provides an invaluable service."

Charities, community and voluntary organisations, and social enterprises that are working within Pembrokeshire are eligible to apply to Milford Haven Port's Community Fund.
