A loyal local cancer research fundraiser will be doing some ‘self-raising’ for charity again this year by selling her Christmas cakes in Tenby.

Maureen Lower MBE has been making and selling real traditional Christmas cakes to aid various charities for the past 25 years.

Maureen, who lived in Berlin for 42 years, and now resides in Kilgetty, was awarded the MBE from Her Majesty the Queen in 2003 for her volunteering work, and the German Medal of Merit.

The most cakes she has made in one year is 150 cakes using approximately 35kg of flour, 42kg mixed fruit, 360 eggs and 22kg of brown sugar!

“The cakes are bursting with moist fruit, dripping with light brown sugar and butter, generously coated with marzipan and icing, and traditional Christmas decorations, to make it an ideal Christmas present,” said Maureen, who started collecting orders for her cakes last month, with all the proceeds going towards Cancer Research UK.

Maureen will be selling her latest batch of Christmas cakes and taking orders for them at Augustus Place Community Centre in Tenby on Wednesday, between 10 am and 3 pm.
