A march for Gaza took place in Haverfordwest on Saturday (June 29) with several speakers calling on the UK Government to stop the sales of arms to Israel and for an immediate ceasefire.
The only general election candidate for the Mid and South Pembrokeshire seat to attend the planned protest was Cris Tomos of Plaid Cymru.
Cris gave a speech to reinforce that he and Plaid Cymru have been consistently calling for a peaceful ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages and a negotiated end to the conflict.
Plaid’s motion calling for an immediate ceasefire in November 2023 was passed by the Senedd. Plaid also opposed and voted against the Economic Activity of Public Bodies (Overseas Matters) Bill which was aimed at preventing public authorities from participating in boycotts, divestment and sanctions campaigns.
Cris remarked: “Recognising the State of Palestine is an essential step towards peace in the region.
“Plaid Cymru condemns in the strongest possible terms the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7, the murder of tens of thousands of innocent civilians in the region, and the horrific genocide committed by the Israeli Government against the people of Gaza.
“Amnesty International classifies the State of Israel as an apartheid state, which has received the direct and indirect support of Western governments, including the United Kingdom.”
Cris and Plaid further believe that Israeli Government Ministers responsible for war crimes, including genocide, should be held accountable by international courts for their actions.
“I will demand that the UK Government enforces all decisions made by the International Criminal Court, including acting on all arresting warrants it issues,” continued Cris.
“I further call on the UK Government to expel the Israeli ambassador until such time as the Israeli Government ends its apartheid and illegal actions. If elected I will also demand a ban on all arms sales to the state of Israel.”
