Tourist trade members in Pembrokeshire have taken a 'through the keyhole' tour to some of the county's outstanding visitor accommodation.

And they have also watched a makeover miracle which has helped new hoteliers take their first steps towards four-star status.

The visit took in The Grove at Narberth, Stoney Bridge Guest House, near Saundersfoot and Narberth's Plas Hyfryd Hotel.

Then it was on to Tenby's Giltar Hotel, where award-winning interior designer Linda Hunt had been at work for new owners Malcolm Brace and Patrick Jenkins to transform a sea-view bedroom.

"They were very sporting in allowing Linda to do some 'before and after' comparisons," said Alison Belton, chief executive of Pembrokeshire Tourism, which organised the event.

"We had some excellent feedback from the tour, and it proved a great inspiration to people keen to upgrade their rooms to meet visitor expectations, as well as an insight into the differing levels of expectation from the grading structure within Visit Wales."

Linda, of Meigan Designs, Boncath, worked with the colours of sand and sea to create one large bedroom from two smaller ones.

"It's a rare opportunity to work with a room in such a stunning location, and I was very happy to give my time free - not only in support of Pembrokeshire Tourism, but also to help the Giltar in its quest to achieve a four-star standard," she said.

Malcolm and Patrick were so pleased with Linda's work that they have asked her to be the interior designer for the refurbishment project at their hotel.

Said Malcolm: "Linda's talent is endless - she took the bedroom from its raw state and transformed it into something beautiful."

Lowri Edwards, the co-ordinator of Gallu, the South West Wales tourism development programme, was on the tour and described it as 'very interesting and informative'.

"It was a very good day with a lot of variety, and the transformation of the room at the Giltar was the icing on the cake," she added.

Commented Pembrokeshire Tourism chairman Nick Evans: "This  was another example of the innovative way that Pembrokeshire Tourism develops events and training for its members.

"We have an amazing destination in Pembrokeshire which visitors absolutely love, but we must continue to ensure that the product is of high quality and good value - because that is what our consumers want."
