RETIRED agriculture lecturer, Haydn Davies, from Aberystwyth, had a big surprise when visiting Pembrokeshire recently when, together with his wife Wendy, they stayed with friends Patrick and Valerie Jones at Loveston. Haydn, Wendy and Patrick were students together at Aberystwyth in the 1950s and after a long break, renewed their friendship in the early 1990s after a chance meeting at a Rotary event. During Haydn's recent visit, Patrick set up a surprise farm walk for him with one of Pembrokeshire's leading farmers. David James farms at Langdon, Reynalton, and with his brother Hugh, is acknowledged to be amongst the most successful agriculturalists in the county. Twenty years ago, Haydn was one of David's lecturers at the Welsh Institute of Rural Studies at Aberystwyth. They had not met since then. "Haydn was a great inspiration to me and I have a great deal for which to thank him," said David. The visit brought a great deal of satisfaction to Haydn. "What a wonderful surprise," he said "It was great to see David again and extremely gratifying to see how successful he has become." After the walk, the evening was concluded over a convivial pint or two - where else, but at the Cresselly Arms, Cresswell Quay - another successful enterprise!
