'Seminar Cyfraith Hywel' has held meetings since 1970 to study in detail different aspects of the Law of Hywel Dda. In response to a suggestion welcomed by the Hywel Dda Centre, a colloquium was recently held at Whitland.

Whitland is the traditional scene of the inauguration of the Law of Hywel Dda, and it was fitting that it was held here this year as the Centre celebrates 20 years since it was officially opened in 1985, as well as the opening of the new extension in June.

The Mayor, Clr. Con Harries, and County Councillor Roy Llewellyn, chairman of Canolfan Hywel Dda, welcomed visitors to the Centre, and Emeritus Professor Dafydd Jenkins presided.

Distinguished speakers during the morning were Professor Thomas Charles-Edwards, Gwenno Angharad Elias, Morfydd E. Owen and Meinir Harris.

After a buffet lunch, provided by Sue and Philip, of The Old Boardschool, St. Clears, there was a short expedition to Whitland Abbey in the company of the Rev. Dr. David Williams and the Rev. Professor Thomas Watkin.

The distinguished speakers during the afternoon were Bronagh Ni Chonaill, Christine James, Sara Elin Roberts and David Stephenson.

The organiser, Morfydd E. Owen, secretary of 'Seminar Cyfraith Hywel', said: 'The seminar cannot praise too greatly the help given by members and wives of members of the Hywel Dda management committee and by the secretary, Ken Rees, in particular."

At the end of the day, Professor Charles-Edwards presented copies of the three major publications of the seminar to the Hywel Dda Centre. Members hoped that this special day would help the committee in their efforts to promote the Centre and inspire future generations to build on the example set by Hywel Dda at Whitland.
