Steve Aston and Phil Watson, from Surrey, have just completed a sponsored marathon motorbike ride of over 2,000 miles in five days - all for charity. The money raised will be divided between two charities. SERV, also known as the 'Blood Runners', is a charitable organisation that delivers blood products to the emergency and accident hospitals across Southern England at night, free of charge, whenever and wherever it's urgently needed, while Marie Curie Nurses is an organisation which provides free nursing care to cancer cases and others in their own home. Their adventure started at Box Hill in Surrey, before going on past Stonehenge down to Land's End, before returning and crossing into Wales - ending with an overnight stop with Phil's mum, Jean Watson, at Stepaside: a distance of 618 rainy miles in 11 hours' riding time - and that was just the first day! Phil and Jean are quite unusual in that not only are they both Rotarians, but both were presidents of their respective Rotary Clubs at the same time - 2004 to 2005. Phil was president of the Rotary Club of Morden in Surrey, while Jean was president at Narberth and Whitland. It may well have been the only time a mother and son have been presidents simultaneously in the UK. While in Stepaside, the bikers made a short diversion to meet Rotarian Mike Werrett, also from the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland, who knows all about motorbike marathons since he, and a fellow Rotarian, Fred Chamberlain, did a similar trip from Land's End to John O'Groats in 2001. Steve and Phil met Mike, and his wife Lynn, at their home at Pen y Lan, Whitland, and were joined by Phil's mum Jean and other Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland. After a quick cup of tea, it was time to say 'goodbye' - next stop Carlisle - a mere 306 miles and eight hours riding time away, making an accumulative total on the second day of 924 miles. After finally reaching the tip of Scotland, they immediately turned around and headed back to Surrey, eventually clocking up an incredible 2,140 miles in five days. Phil and Steve would like to thank all those who made donations which, amazingly, have reached over £5,000 ( including £150 from the Rotarians at Narberth and Whitland.)
