The gardening competition run by Begelly Kilgetty Community Association took place on July 13, one week earlier than usual, as requested by last year's competitors. On a blisteringly hot day, the judges hardly wilted, and did a sterling job. Thanks go to Don and Eira Moore and Duncan Hilling for taking on such a difficult task. Lunch was taken at Begelly Park Gardens, under the shade of a large tree, and was a delicious and welcome break. A slightly smaller number of gardens were entered this year, but it was mid-afternoon before the results were decided. Thanks to all who took part this year; the gardens were really spectacular! Thanks go also to the shops who dealt with the entry forms, and for the donations to help with costs. Stepaside CP School have taken part as usual, with an Environmental Poster Competition and the on- going horticulture project. There will be prizes awarded for the children who have done most in the school gardens, which are really well established now, and a credit to all concerned. The Open Gardens Day was held on Saturday, which gave an opportunity to see some of the winning gardens. Ken Barratt kindly manned the Centre that morning, selling the maps. The Presentation of Prizes and Strawberry Tea will be held next Friday, July 29, at 5 pm in the Community Centre. All who entered the competition are most welcome to attend. The chairman, Colin Williams, will present the prizes, and a garden- themed raffle will be held. Finally, a reminder that the Bulldog Vintage Vehicle Run and Carnival will take place on Saturday, August 6. A full programme for the day is planned, and the Village Tea Tent will be open all day on the sportsfield. The Co-op has kindly allowed the association to sell raffle tickets for the event on July 28 and 29. Please go and buy! And please go and enjoy carnival day with them - floats and fancy dress walkers are welcome; the more the merrier!
