'OUT of His Mind', the latest exhibition by John Cleal, is different from any previous work by this innovative and explorative artist. With each successive exhibition - and in the past 23 years he has mounted 18 one-man shows and contributed to numerous group exhibitions nationwide - Cleal surprises with new thoughts, new insights and even totally new styles.

Sixty years working with pencil, brush and chisel and a lifetime of observation and communication have brought him past acclaim. Now we see yet another aspect of his creativity in the thoughts and ideas that come 'Out of His Mind'.

It all began with a large sheet of blank cartridge paper calling to be filled with images. Once the first marks were made ideas began to flow, each new image integrated into, or onto, the preceding one.

Sometimes days passed before new thoughts generated until the sheet, the first of many, gradually became filled with an extraordinary collection of related and unrelated images flowing from the library of his mind.

There are touches of whimsical Cleal humour, experiments purely to establish whether they will work, revelations of the discipline of the ancient Celts, the influence of the primitive arts of Africa and the traditions of European art.

This is an exhibition which offers visual delight, but is also inspiring - an exciting, stimulating collection of work which should not be missed.

'Out of His Mind' opens at Workshop Wales Gallery, Manorowen, Fishguard, on May 2, running until June 6. The gallery is open from 10 am to 5 pm daily, but closed Monday (tel: 01348 891619).
