ON Friday, September 5, artist Barry John MBE will be giving a fascinating talk on the artist Gwen John at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery. Barry joined the army at the age of 16 and served in Israel, Kosovo and Northern Ireland, among many other overseas postings. He has been a painter for over 10 years, exhibiting in many shows over the world. His work is in collections nationwide and he was commissioned to paint a piece for the Welsh actor Rhys Ifans. Barry left the army in December 2013 after 24 years service in the Royal Welsh regiment. He has used his extensive military experience to help others and has taken art therapy sessions for soldiers and veterans. He received the MBE in 2010 and has since pioneered his own community arts studio, The VC Gallery, in Haverfordwest (Gwen John's birthplace), helping soldiers, veterans and the community through art engagement. Barry has had a long fascination with Gwen John and has undertaken substantial research into her life and art. In 2013 he made a personal journey to Dieppe to trace the last days of Gwen to try and solve the riddle of her final resting place and the talk will detail this journey and his discoveries. If you are interested in hearing this intriguing talk, then please contact the museum on (01834) 842809 to book a place. Tickets are £5, or £4 with a Friends of the Museum membership card. The talk starts at 7 pm on Friday, September 5.
