Observer readers have been having their say following a call for a ‘shake-up’ of health services in the locality, and although plans to create a ‘health and wellbeing’ hub in Tenby have been touted - concerns continue to be raised over proposals for a new general hospital being sited on the outskirts of Pembrokeshire itself, raising questions of travel links and transport.

At the recent meeting of the South East Pembrokeshire Community Health Network those in attendance heard calls for more health services to be delivered locally rather than at remote hospitals.

It was explained to those present that the schedule of meetings for the coming year included a special session on ideas for creating a health and wellbeing hub in Tenby.

County Manager of the Hywel Dda Health Board John Evans also provided an update on the progress for plans to build a new hospital at Whitland or St Clears, and explained that any plans would require more local services to be developed.

A spokesperson for Hywel Dda recently stated: "At Welsh Government's request the health board is now drafting a strategic outline case, which includes the new hospital and the conversion of both Glangwili and Withybush Hospitals to community facilities.

“The next stage will be an outline business case, at which point - if supported by Welsh Government - the health board would seek to secure the land for the hospital,” they added.

In response to the article, many readers took to social media to voice their concerns over the poor state of heath services and facilities for the county, in general.

“Every area in Pembrokeshire is being robbed of decent services,” stated one, with another remarking: “Hywel Dda health board needs major surgery not a sticking plaster!”

Another shared details of their own personal plight, stating: “I’m a transplant patient who has recently returned home from 30 years in London. Whist I am delighted to be home, the state of Hywel Dda and NHS Wales is a living nightmare.

“They systematically get everything wrong - I have been sent to Cardiff, Swansea, Llantrisant, Port Talbot, Cardigan, Carmarthen, Llanelli, Haverfordwest for appointments and I don't drive due to disability.

“There is no train service to Haverfordwest from Tenby - nothing! I am literally incredulous and scared for my life despite some of the amazing staff. I am genuinely shocked by the level of gaslighting and negligence I have experienced,” they added.
