Redberth Croft CIC in Pembrokeshire is delighted to announce the successful launch of its new 'Hedging Your Vets' project, a community-driven initiative aimed at providing veterans and individuals at risk of social exclusion with vital skills in traditional hedgelaying, supported by the Port of Milford Haven Community Fund.
“Redberth Croft CIC is a charitable community farm near Kilgetty dedicated to enhancing the wellbeing of veterans, adults with Additional Learning Needs, carers and those at risk of social exclusion through outdoor-based activities, conservation projects, and animal-assisted therapy using rescue animals.
The first two-day hedge-laying course took place recently at Redberth Croft under sunny skies, bringing together community members, including veterans and volunteers.
This marks the beginning of a winter-long project that will offer training in rural crafts while promoting mental health and wellbeing through outdoor activities.
‘Hedging Your Vets’ is designed to provide not only practical skills but also therapeutic benefits, as participants engage with nature and experience the camaraderie of working alongside others.
The project aims to run through the winter months, equipping veterans and the wider community with skills in hedgerow restoration, a practice that plays a crucial role in enhancing local biodiversity and ecosystem health.
Daisy Coleman, founder of Redberth Croft CIC, said: “The launch of the 'Hedging Your Vets' project is a proud moment for us. Thanks to the generous support from the Port of Milford Haven Community Fund, we’re able to provide a much-needed program that empowers veterans and marginalized individuals, giving them practical skills and a sense of purpose. The positive energy and teamwork during the first course were truly inspiring.”
Funded in part by the Port of Milford Haven, the 'Hedging Your Vets' project aligns with the fund’s focus on creating sustainable, resilient environments and vibrant, prosperous communities.
Through this initiative, Redberth Croft CIC will not only support personal growth for its participants but also contribute to environmental conservation by restoring hedgerows and promoting sustainable land practices.
